Circular / Chop Saw Recommendations

Can anyone point me in the right direction. 
 

I had an idea to buy a circular saw, but then thought I would make use of a chop saw for some light work, cutting pipes and whatever.

 

Im not averse to spending money but is there a combination saw, like a chop saw that I could remove and then use as circular saw.

I'm not sure if there are modular units available, but with the need for drop saws to be accurate in two planes, I wouldn't recommend that used one anyway. the time required to calibrate the drop saw might be a pain.

 

Depending on what you are cutting and how large it is, you might want to look as a compound drop saw that can be pulled toward the user as well as pulled down. It will allow you to cut larger section materials.

 

Also, check the base plate for smoothness of rotation and clamping ability. Cheap saws are often not accurate, are sometimes troublesome to set and may be difficult to keep locked in position.

 

I've seen some De Walt units floating around but I am not sure if they are making several models based on quality these days.

Thanks for the swift reply .. I checked on Lazada, I need to go look at some tool shops near me, we have a few decent ones.

 

I think the best search term is mitre saw, rather than chop saw.

 

Are you suggesting that the ones by ‘total’ and ‘Mixpro’ might not be of the highest quality?

 

i need to find some middle ground, I don’t think I will make enough use of an expensive saw, Stanley tools seem to be ok at the moment.

What you want to look at are SCMS (Sliding Compound Mitre Saws)

and as to middle ground, it’s a little difficult if you buy cheap it will probably not be pleasant to use and may never be accurate. 
 

If you decide on the size of material you want to cut then you may find that a 7½” SCMS will be enough and that will be where you can save. I have a 12” which is good.  Personally I like the Makita saws as value for money. There are also the pumpkin brand tools that are OK

 

However there is an alternative which is the radial arm saw (not one I wold ever buy but it may work for you.

In the US I  our professional shop I use the DeWalt miter saw, IMO it is the best value for the money. I am in my second one with very heavy use. If you can find the same one in Thailand, Buy it.

Perfect! If you say pumpkin are an ok choice, I’m happy to give it a whirl. 
 

It’s really for cutting blue pvc pipes for aquaponics and bits of plumbing at home.

 

I’m getting sick of “getting by” like the locals. I think it’s quicker and easier just to buy a few more power tools:

More power tools are always good though SWMBO does not agree ???? 
 

A mitre saw is not a good tool for that job. A sabre/reciprocating saw is far better for that job DAMHIKT ???? 

You can always use a Japanese pull saw. Source for those

I’ve got a Pumpkin SDS drill and it’s certainly okay for light use.

A few years ago I had a problem sourcing a proper plastic blade for a "normal" hand. Something like 8 inch?

 

You might find better luck with a reciprocation saw for plastic?

 

But I was cutting nylon not PVC.

 Marita circular saw, Hitachi Heavy duty hammer drill, 4" paler, belt sander, 2 jig saws, various hand drills, bench drill press, 4' grinder Sminge Air compressor with hoses and attachments,  arc welder with 20 meter cables and accessories, angle grinder, Hitachi router, 4" heavy duty vice, two 1 meter pie vices  and much much more.  I will sell it cheap, at least 50% of what I paid for it or all  as a package deal even cheaper.

 

Also I have a chain saw with 16" bar,  gas brush cutter, an electric grass trimmer. a power washer, electric backpack sprayer and various other goodies.

 

If you want two houses side by side on 3 rai of land fully furnished and stoked including 5 dogs and a 1998 Hissan Big M truck i'll make you an attractive package deal and hand you the keys on my way out on 6 June.
