Songkran holiday extension being discussed

The economic sector is discussing an extension of holidays during the Songkran festival – from April 11-19 – before it proposes the measure to the government on February 18, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said.

 

In the past, a similar strategy was used to stimulate the economy, but the government again has to weigh the disadvantages of this move. However, the possibility of it was announced so that people could make holiday plans in advance.

 

Regarding the effect the extension will have on banks and other organisations, Wissanu said banks, courts and hospitals might be exempt, which was usually the case during long holidays.

No more than every other day of the year. Often there are less killed than usual daily carnage.

If a nine-day Songkran will flood the country with untold volumes of hard cash and boost the economy….why not have a similar extended holiday every month?

Money spending on alcohol up, road death up, lack of schooling and lack of water VS Lack of production and exports

If they do extend it, they should rename it "Nine Days of Death", I am sure more people will come with that being said.....

 

this topic was doing the rounds a few days ago... old news.

Best time of year to avoid Thailand. But, by then they maybe under quarantine. Incompetence has it's consequences. 

We booked to leave Thailand over my Easter break and are returning on Wed 15th night so as to avoid it. I will be annoyed if they then carry it on for the Thur 16th and Fri 17th.

 

Also, as another poster mentioned in a previous thread about this. If the holiday is extended, does that mean all government offices and immigration are closed for well over a week?  

If the average Joe Thai person has to take extra leave to boost tourist spending where is the average Joe Thai getting this extra money?

Let's not and say we did. Don't they take enough time off of their work and away from their businesses? And I'm tired of getting splashed with water. I may have to extend my holiday in the US just so I can miss it entirely.

They're barking mad. In related news, there's severe water shortage (so it would be wise not to splash more water than "necessary") and a coronavirus threat (so it would be wise to limit traveling around).

 

Oh, and factories are closing and workers are getting laid off. So it might be wise to help people find a new job quickly instead of giving them more holiday time to p1ss away their severance pay

What is the difference?

In Rollerball they wore helmets.

A lot like to remark about the "waste" of water, just how much water do you consider is "wasted" in this ancient festival? 

I have checked reservoir levels in previous years and there has been no difference before or after Songkran, so interested to know where the "waste" is wasted

BUT!, as previously mentioned, the "7" deadly days usually have lower death rates than a "normal" day in Thailand!

Maybe a smart move?

The Government are assessing the impact to their popularity if this proposal goes ahead 

( 9 X extra Days Holiday X the expected Road Death s per day of 60 Avg = 720 Deaths )

They will probably be expendable in order to get a few more Baht in the coffers.

Great. No rain, rice and sugar cane dying in the fields, dams nearly critical, Not enough water, worst drought for years.

 

So - what do they do?

 

Extend the annual water-splasing festival.

 

That'll work.

Actually, statistically the so called 'deadly days' are safer, well there are fewer fatalities, no doubt because the publicity and extra policing works to some extent.

 

But extending Songkran when tourists just aren't coming regardless is to the benefit of who?  If people aren't working, they aren't earning, if they're not earning they're not spending. Meanwhile productivity takes a dive because factories aren't producing. Can't really see any upside to this.
