Land deed: Legal or Scam?

Last Wednesday, I went to a famous temple in Dan Khun Tod with a few friends (Thai and foreigners).
As I entered the museum, I was greeted by a man at the entry desk and he asked in broken English if we needed assistance.
We accepted his offer and he lead us trough the museum of "Luang Pho".
After the visit to the Museum, at the exit door, there was a stand with several items which anyone could buy.
One particular item drawed my attention and I wanted to know more about that item.
Apparently, it was a book of "Chanottes" where anyone could make a donation to the temple and get a "Chanotte" for the amount of land owned.
I donated a sum, and got a "Chanotte" in return.
The purchase was written in Thai (legal translation of my passport).
I asked my girlfriend and the man at the counter if this was legal, and they confirmed that it was completely legal.
I had no intention to claim the land and saw the purchase as a gift to the temple.

But yesterday, another friend of mine, purchased/donated in another temple a piece of land and got a "Chanotte".
Fully legal according to her.
She explained that the donations to the temples are like buying a Condominium.
The temple is the owner of the land, but several people can buy a piece of the land from the owner.

Did I buy LEGALLY a piece of land in Thailand as a foreigner or not?

No you did not buy any land ,, but its  a certificate of donation ,  quite common,, no legal value though

What you bought was a small share of the Temple premises...

 

HOA and monthly maintenance fees will soon follow...????

It says you bought the land for the temple.

As the previous poster said, probably just a certificate of donation, kind of like a receipt.

So you don't own any land ????

You cannot own land in Thailand unless you're Thai.

I remember when I was a kid and one of the cereal companies was running a promotion where they were trading you a square inch of land in the Alaska "Gold Country " for X number of box tops

 

I received a Land Title Deed in the mail for "My Claim"

They have probably sold your piece of land ten times before you bought it.

Don't plan on building too big a house on the land you have just "purchased" at the temple!

Not wishing to be pedantic but there is at least one  small space of land you can buy in Thailand as a foreigner. Although I am not rushing to buy it yet!

yes you can

there are explicit provisions in the relevant Thai statute that allows for

land ownership by foreigners

 

and those provisions have been in pace for quite some years now

You do not own any land. That is forbidden for foreigners by law. What you own is a share in the building on the land.

However only 10 Rai for executives and directors of the Company. However, it must be noted that although it may be permissible to own up to 10 or 20 Rai, this depends on how large or small your company is and the activities involved, which will then be ultimately up to the discretion of the Board of Investment. This land brought also has to be located in the same area where the Company is located. The Board of Investment may also grant privileges to the applying company permission to own land if it will be used for an activity promoted by Board of Investment, however this must not exceed 5 rai and must be owned by a foreign company and also deal with the activity requested of. Please also bear in mind that permission from the Ministry of Interior must be obtained before any such grant.

I've bought the area where the American flag is and would sell it very cheap.

 

   Only 25,000 baht with all the right documents. That includes the translation into any language you prefer.

The Board of Investment (BOI)

Any foreigner wishing to promote a business or invest in Thailand may be granted specific privileges, like the permission to own land.

The Investment Promotion Act grant sincentives to the business, not the individual, but under the BOI scheme a foreigner may control their Thai business, something which can not be done with a conventional Thai Company Ltd. And if they control the company, it means they also have control over any land owned by the company.

Any foreigner who is in a position to utilise the BOI scheme is also afforded legal control of a Thai property.
