Anutin changes tack: Health minister who blamed farang says masks are not necessary after all

Thailand's under fire health minister Anutin Charvirakul has changed his mind on the use of masks.

Just a couple of weeks ago Anutin - also a deputy prime minister who aspires to the top job - was blaming "farangs" who would not accept his free mask handouts.

In a foul mouth rant he said they should leave Thailand if they are not prepared to accept and wear masks.

Now he has changed tack entirely saying that the wearing of masks is not necessary if you are not sick from Covid-19.

Asked if it could actually be detrimental to wear masks he told Thai Rath that is a question for the infectious diseases department.

He stressed that frequent hand washing and avoiding large gatherings was important at this time.

He admitted that there were reports of hoarding of masks.

Meanwhile in other related news Thailand has appealed to the Chinese for medications to fight Covid-19.

Anutin claimed Thailand had enough so long as there was not a large escalation but representations had been made through the Charge D'Affaires in Thailand for medicines available in China that are not yet licenced for sale outside China.

The minister said that this had received a favorable response.

He stressed that Thai produced medicines were effective and stocks in the kingdom were sufficient for now.

The Moto-GP event in Buriram scheduled for March has been postponed, reported Thai Rath.

The guy is a dick, first of all when there were no masks he said they were not necessary.

He then got his hands on some for a photo shoot, and said they were.

The masks have run out and now they are not necessary again.

Can anyone see the pattern here?

Not to worry, Anutin. Whether healthy people choose to wear them not, we were told there were enough masks.

In times like these, we need strong leaders who know what they’re doing. Funny, there were people who actually voted this lot in based on that premise. It seems they’re pretty clueless to me. Not that I didn’t know that before.

i demand a national apology! Hate this idiot!!

You do realize people though his intentions were no doubt coming from a place of fear. Clearly this government doesnt care about its own people but its the farang going back to there own countries infected which would make the country look bad give the reason for the childish outburst.

....and if you are sick from it, you shouldn't leave your house/room/hospital before you're cured.

He must be right as for the second day running he's wearing a doctor's shirt.

Tomorrow I expect to see him with a stethoscope and the day after one of those units ENT doctors wear on their heads.

As my old man used to say .... "Better remain silent and people only suspect you are stupid, rather than open your mouth and convince people you dont know what you are either doing or talking about!"

I'm guessing his Mom still dresses him.

He should only stick with what he is doing best: legalizing cannabis.

If he is the result of cannabis usage, the it would be best to make its usage a mandatory death penalty.

So while other countries are starting to lose control of infection, the numbers in China are miracouesly  sliding close to zero with only 121 new cases today in the hub land of over 1 billion population

Perhaps you missed the announcement last week from the Health Minister in Indonesia, commenting on the zero cases report there? It's all down to prayer. On the other hand, the epicentres of the cases in both Singapore and Korea are churches

Another absolute charlatan in this government, just like the Sports and Tourism Minister, been shown up as a complete chump. Fantastic to see.

Where is the response of our embassies? This guy painted a target on our backs and our embassies said and did nothing to protect their citizens. You think China or Russia would have let this go without an uproar? Useless cowardly Western diplomats too busy hating their own.
