LOPBURI, Thailand (Reuters) - A mass brawl between two troupes of monkeys in Thailand's Lopburi province, captured on a video clip that went viral online last week, sparked concerns that the animals might be starving as coronavirus pandemic was keeping tourists away.

But people in the province insisted the monkeys would not go hungry, and that officials and residents were giving them leftover food and vegetables.

"The monkeys are not starving because officials are taking care of them. In the morning, they will give the monkeys vegetables from the market," Pakawan Koontawee told Reuters.

The 41-year-old food vendor said her own business was suffering as a result of the lost tourist trade.

"The monkeys aren't starving, but we are," she said.

"The monkeys aren't starving, but we are," she said.

Quote of the day.

Sadly she will not be alone in this current climate.

How would it be if they just let the monkeys be. They are born with the instinct to survive.

Lopburi isnt a village. The monkey get all sorts of scrap food and will be fine. The residents should look to their government.

How did they survive before humans started feeding them? They sound like a lot of dole bludgers to me.

I'd have thought that the monkeys would already have become accustomed to this?

wasn't public feeding Banned loonnng time before the China Wuhan virus problem?

My guess is that you just made something up that you not can explain yourself. What in the world are you meaning, and what is the point of your post?

What has the feeding or not feeding of monkeys to do with my behaviour?

I know you call yourself a wombat, but I am not going to go further in on that. Yeah, what do I know. Maybe it´s just me that do not own your great knowledge about animals and their behaviour. I have my hands full with humans.

The virus may get them to. They are closely related to us. They should gather most of them up, break them up by the identifiable groups and bring them to the forests that are left like up in Kao Yai, etc. Operation Monkey Drop.

These are city born and bred monkeys in a human populated portion of Lopburi.  I've seen them many times.  They have no where to go to get food.  If anything, they could be relocated back to one of the National parks, although, it might be tough on them to survive, since now they depend on humans to feed them.

Agreed. Wild animals become dependent upon humans, when humans deem it appropriate to treat them as some sort of accessory entertainment.

Yes, this is what has happened in Lopburi.  They were a tourist attraction for many, many years, until now they aren't.

Obviously the population has grown unsustainable. Let nature run it's course and the numbers will drop.

Unemployed lady bar , also are starving , and their boyfriends .

Most tourist that feed the monkeys are Thai's ,most buy the feed from local shops to feed the monkeys ,a few will bring it with them ,as the guy said they will not go hungry, the market is only a couple of hundred yards up the road

We watched the mass brawl on tv last week ,the problem is that they are too many of them ,a few years ago the Thai  DLD, Department of Livestock Development had a go at spaying some of the femal's  and castrating some of the males ,time for another go .

Just walking down the road is not easy ,they have ripped plastic bags from people's hands , I have been told more than once not to leave bags on motorcycles , now leave the bike well away ,the authorities  might now  do something.

Rice in the fields, fish in the rivers and fruit in the trees...Thais keep telling me they will be OK and aren't bothered about no tourists....but they can't fish a new I phone or hilux out of the river

7, 8 years ago or longer, they used to be way fewer in number.  Now it looks like Planet of the Apes.

No.  I remember back in 2007, 2008, there were maybe 20-30 monkeys there.  Now about 200, maybe 250.
