Cannot see it for the smoke,all these new laws and conditions regarding the Covid virus,

but The Government does very little to stop the burning,but its the same every year........

A friend just delivered masks to the members of the firefighters there on Doi Sutep. 

It is a forest fire, not a "burning" for later crops. There are only 2 helicopters available for water drops. 

This is being addressed. How effective or how many bodies are there, I don't know, but it is being addressed.

Same every year, it's a national disgrace. I see satellite photos of all the places in the world where pollution is lessening because of reduced travel and industrial activity as a result of the virus. No reduction in smoke in Chiang Mai though, We're number one onna worl as my wife says. Definitely not something to be proud of.

Folks, educate yourselves please. This is not just a 'Chiang Mai problem' and Chiang Mai is not the most polluted city. Stats are readily available on AirVisual.

Agreed.

As the world tourism market slowly recovers over the next six or seven years, Thailand will be at a serious disadvantage in a world where, after Covid-19, people will be far more worried about respiratory problems and less willing to spend time in places where their lungs could become compromised.

The same applies to talented and educated Thais who have options to work in other countries. The miserable atmosphere of the burning season has a big impact on quality of life and productivity.

The government has really shot itself in both feet by refusing to understand how devastating problem is to Thailand's future.

You may know that Thailand, amongst all world countries, ranks near the very top of 'wealth inequality'.  Which means, as far as i can learn, that only a few Thais have most of the money and the vast majority of Thais have very little.

 

The toppmost guy in Thailand has bags/bags/bags of $$$, owners and families of business conglomerates (think RedBull, CP foods, Leo beer, etc) fall next in bags of $$, top Army guys also rank high with numerous Rolex watches, and bags of $.

 

Does any thinking person believe such folks would want to give up their financial power in the world to the common man?  Not in this lifetime.  None of those guys, or their families, are suffering from air pollution.  Some big shots live nearly full time overseas in western countries where the air is clean, the tall snow-crested  mountains catch the eye and all is sweet for them.  

 

The poor man in north Thailand breathing shi**y air does not concern them. And never will.

We already returned, but did enjoy the clean air down South while we could.

There is no need to do anything. Negative media coverage only starts to be a nuisance around February. By March, government releases some "very concerned" statements. By April, they will take some symbolic acts and "commit" to fix the problem.. By May, the rains arrive and everyone forgets it. Until the next year.
