On the other hand Pattaya could be reset/improved. There has been oversupply, over development. So in future with better exchange rate, less traffic, less low end tourists/secondhand cigarette smoke. And so on. In a year it very well may be better here than before. You don't like Thai food 7 days/week ? You think supermarkets are going to disappear??. I dare say your going off the rails with your negativity Bud.

Totally agree.

Look how much Patong improved after a tragic event.

I think the elders in the herd would disagree with you.  Not to mention, there are now over half a dozen new mutations of the original virus.

"Let it rip" and who knows what virus you end up with.  Maybe a virus that kills everyone.

I'm an elder. I agree with @WillyPlatt. And I'm guessing most of the 'herd immunity' group are also.

Did the guys ever build the new bar complex in The Avenue? Was due to be finished this month as I remember.

Talk about getting the timing right!

Pattaya could reset, but without a nice beach, and clean ocean water, I doubt it, but possible.  Also, Pattaya is famous for the sex trade, and it's hard to shake off that reputation without serious government enforcement.

Yes, I know supermarkets will be open, I was thinking more about restaurants catering for westerners.  There will be too many to survive with just expats here, and a trickle of tourists over the next 12 to 18 months.

I suppose we could speculate on the percentage of businesses that cater for westerns that will not open back up when the virus crisis has finished, but I guess a lot of that depends on their Thai landlord.  Perhaps it's the landlords that may force a rest of many businesses, and simply sell out to the Chinese.  Who knows?

Early days at this stage, but for sure Pattaya 2020/21 will have a different atmosphere.

Yeah... putting in Neon as we speak!

Sorry... but do you need to ask?

Have you seen the statistics coming out of Italy and Spain?  Herd immunity is not beneficial to the elderly, in fact, it can be fatal.

Considering that the average Joes, worldwide, are going to be wiped out by the economic depression, only the wealthy will be able to travel, and Thailand could target quality, instead of quantity...and look at countries such as the Maldives or Botswana for inspiration...

What would lure the wealthy to Pattaya?  It's certainly not the beach.

the women ( and men for some )

Sure, so Pattaya needs to go back to it's roots. (no pun intended)

The sex trade made Pattaya famous, successful, and profitable, and that's no surprise.

Trouble is, the mongers, typically from the west, will be broke for some time to come, so the sex industry isn't going to kick start tourism any time soon.

That's a bait and switch reply: your post #72 question was what would attract the wealthy to Pattaya as suggested by Brunolem and then answered by HBH. So now you're giving reasons why average visitors will not be visiting Pattaya. Those reasons not apply to the wealthy.

Much has been said about this already. So maybe this thread could morph into one about security and how to go about protecting against the seemingly inevitable rise in crime. For example, I have urged my daughter to always lock the car doors when out. If on the motorbike, she should always look around her for anyone suspiciously following her. And if anyone suspicious comes near her to be ready to throw away some smaller notes.

Your daughter probably feel very much in depth too you for making her feel more insecure and scared outside and around people. What you are doing here is creating a fobies in another persons mind.

You must be kidding. There's nothing wrong with sensible precautions, especially when you're a young female. Do you lock your front door when you go to sleep at night?

No, I am not kidding. That you do not see the great difference between locking your front door and throwing small notes, that´s what´s wrong with your whole concept.

There is a name for that. It´s scaremongering. There is also another thing that is wrong. That´s the use of the word sensible in combination with your many advices.

As I have said before, Pattaya has positioned itself in a strange place in the South East Asian tourism market.  It's too cheap and nasty for the wealthy, and has a beach and ocean water that is rubbish.  It's also now too expensive for many middle class foreigners.  It's been surviving on cheap package holiday makers from China and India.

When the virus crisis has finished, those middle class tourists will not have the disposable cash for a holiday here immediately.  Many will have to save again for their holiday here.

Pattaya was losing western tourists way before the virus.  Perhaps it should stick to what worked in the past, and made many Thai's obscenely wealthy, and that was the sex trade, however, a market correction will be needed if Pattaya is going to be able to compete with places like The Philippine and Vietnam.

I don't know the future of Pattaya but it's a fair bet that things will be very different after the virus crisis which potentially could take as long as two years (with on and off waves like the Spanish flu). But one possible future might be simply as a suburb of Bangkok once the high speed trains are finished. It's already got the malls!

There is truth in all that.

In the late nineties, all the visitors coming to Pattaya were Western middle aged single males, there for only one reason.

There was not one farang woman, and obviously no children.

And business was booming, because all these guys were here to spend big time.

The downside was that the season lasted less than 6 months, and from May to October, the city was dead.

Pattaya was transformed into a cheap beach resort with the arrival of the Russians and their families around 2004, and an even cheaper one when the Russians were replaced by the Chinese.

By cheap, I don't mean the prices, but the quality.

In fact, the lower the quality went, the higher the prices climbed.

Now, I can hardly imagine Pattaya going back to its past...the mojo is not there anymore.

But, after a deep cleansing, it could try to reinvent itself, probably by catering first to the local tourists, notably the wealthy people from Bangkok.

Yet, considering the management of the city, this is very unlikely to happen...

The only thing I could see that would make Pattaya boom again would be casinos.  Pattaya is perfect for it.  There's billions of dollars, not baht, but dollars, to be made, if / when casinos are allowed here, and the legitimate employment they provide would be huge.

They could swap cheap package holiday Chinese for wealthy Chinese who want to gamble.

Yeah, sure the disaster that happened to Sihanoukville is a wonderful example to be copied.

China will lose more economic power after the crisis, big companies in Japan and other countries already said they want to move their production out of China.

There are many alternatives, Vietnam, Taiwan, India to name a few.  I think the world have had enough of China.  All that cheap <deleted> plastic they try to sell , enough is enough.

I wouldn't be so sure. The USA has voluntary walked away from it's previous role as the world's primary power and I think the logical end result of this will be that China is stronger than ever. You don't have to like that to realize that.

Pattaya is already a concrete jungle, Sihanoukville wasn't.

I know what you are implying.  The Chinese will be everywhere here with bars and restaurants and will completely change the complexion of Pattaya.  That is possible, but I am thinking instead of bus loads of cheap Chinese package holiday makers, there will be bus loads of wealthy Chinese gamblers staying in big hotels that have gambling facilities.

These wealthy Chinese would not be interested in going to see anything around Pattaya, because they have seen better elsewhere, they would be here only for the gambling.
