Good article this. Many girls have no money and are struggling to feed themselves let alone their family. The govt should help them. Some girls i know have tried to apply for the 5k and have failed so far

Maybe they should have saved some of that money the numerous sponsors were sending them, or from the 3/4k short times or from the 150 BAHT drinks...rather than blowing it on fast food,flash phones and making out they are some thing they are not....sorry don't get any sympathy from me.....15 years go maybe

Know too well how it works...not looking down on anyone for their chosen "profession" but they got above themselves and only themselves to blame

Maybe they should have filed a tax return for their earnings and paid social security...those people that did are receiving assistance from the Givernment...can't have it all ways

Just seems to echo the rest of the Thai people - general lack of financial planning for the future. And these girls generally have 2-3 more income than most thais

Many of the girls who work bars think they are something special ! Now they found out they have no other skills beyond a smile flash eyes and persuade a farang to buy drinks....or buy them

A few guys on this thread who seem to have been burned by girls hence the negativity. It wasn't the beaches and temples that made Thailand very popular

no way you were born as poor as those in Thailand, in the west you get benefits, council houses, all sorts of things that stop you being poor

Yes give them all the 5,000 baht but not the ladies working their fingers to the bone helping their families in the villages survive. 
Thailand is bigger than Pattaya “bar girls” 

I hope after this settles down that immigration takes another look at increasing the restrictions for living here, there's still too much trash in the streets..

I agree, it's not illegal for girls to work in a bar but if you read the Pattaya news article, the girls are described as sex workers.

If sex wasn't mentioned then that would have shone a different light on this subject.

I finally badgered the GF into applying for the 5K handout, and no surprise really that she was one of the 15 million whose application was rejected. She's never had anything good to say about this government, but even Buddha would have had to cover his ears at what she called them when she was told mai dai.

The problem is, that when you fill the form in online, as I did for my wife (whose business is all but dead now), there are quite specific questions about what your job is, what you do, who your boss is, precisely where you work and what landmark is near it. Unless the bargirls lie and just say they were a waitress or cashier or something, they won't be able to fill in the form honestly.

 

Even then the game will be up when a small beer bar in Pattaya has a dozen girls applying for the handout as a "cashier".

You can't just sign up for it.

Like so many other Thais in Sisaket, they only have to fill in jobless.
