PHUKET: Two foreigners and two Thai nationals have been charged with trespass and breach of the Computer Crimes Act for entering Phuket Zoo allegedly without permission and posting online claims that animals at the zoo had been abandoned, and for setting up an account to receive donation to collect money to feed the animals.

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Rungrote Thakurapunyasiri speaking at Chalong Police Station, where the four were charged today (Apr 23), named the four as Australian Minh N., American Joy M. and Thai nationals Hussein A. and Hassun K.

Gen Rungrote alleged that on Apr 14, at about 6pm, Hassan climbed the wall into Phuket Zoo. He recorded a video in the zoo and narrated that the zoo owner had abandoned the animals.

Why is the gov't going to help the zoo feed the animals? Perhaps better to feed the starving people and let a private entity take care of it's own obligations.

"Despite saying that the zoo had enough food to feed the animals and that the animals were in “perfect condition”, officials still promised to provide more food to ensure the welfare of the animals."

According to the story, they've already left the Monkey House.

They are going to need it to get out of this.  The computer crimes act is used religiously here to quiet someone.  It's quite serious to be charged with this.

Only if the animals were being well looked after. Are they? Small zoos with animals that need meat are a very bad idea at the best of times. Large ones with animals that can eat grass and live a semblance of normal life are the best.

I fail to see anything overly sinister about this story. I watched all the videos. Clearly the zoo employees were accepting the food that was purchased and working with the group to feed the animals. They also claimed to be in contact with the zoo owner. Sure they were foolish to set up an account to receive donations, but wait for an audit to see if there was an misappropriation before passing judgment. Many people in Thailand (Thais and foreigners) raise money to feed animals without criminal intent.

The crime here is making zoo owner lose face ,defamation of character.

these people with good intentions poked their noses into another Thai persons business.

Yeah, didn't seem to be entering anywhere without permission.

Zoo staff seemed happy enough they were there.

The animals enjoyed the food.

Where's the harm?

If they wait around too long there will be no animals did they break in or did some of the employees let them in?

I've also watched the videos and the state of the zoo was shocking in parts, animals wallowing in their own filth.

By the sound of it these were the typical animal welfare extremists concerned about animals. No evidence that funds were misappropriated, but evidence money was used to feed the animals.

Of course Spotlight Thailand is using this to incite hatred against foreigners, as usual, even though their page was crippled.

How do you know, that the animals are not taken care of?

Properly are the animals taken care of as usual....We are just dealing with idiots trying to fool people into donating money....I hope they will be spending long time in the "monkey house".

You have no proof of that at the moment
