They should remove the sex bars from the Walking Street and create there a nice area with things like restaurants, small shops and sea view. The bars can be outside Pattaya where only people go that want to go there - there is no need for a beach location. They should move also all other red light areas from the city to this new location and create a paradise for people looking for something like this without disturbing others. Of course there needs to be good and cheap public transportation to this entertainment area. This bar chaos without zoning would come to an end and everyone could be happy.

How about right outside your house?

No great loss, beers were 100 baht last time I made the mistake of having a drink in one of them and groups of Indians were standing on the pavement trying to get the girls out without sitting down for a drink. They may have just been passing rent increases on in their prices but they've slowly killed it. Nicer drinking at the Beer Garden behind them and cheaper.

Be interesting to see what comes of it, I drove past it they day before they started demolition and noticed a couple of vehicles parked out front and a group of official looking guys in similar shirts surveying the situation, seemed a bit odd at the time given everything was shut.

Old caucasian men come here for sex and suicide, which can also be a lot of fun (except for the latter)

Some drink themselves to death, can be fun!

Same thing happened in Bangla. Foreigners keep selling the leases at higher prices till no money could be made. And now the bars are not rented and the little streets are empty. 150+ baht drinks and 220+ baht girl drinks. Last price at the boxing bars was 120+ baht for a well drink and 160+ for a girl drink. No wonder the Indians stay on the fray. You can have high rents or high liquor taxes, you cannot have both. Or use the empty bars as Russian and Chinese laundry mats and parking lots.

They were busy some 15-20yrs ago .....  my hand is still sore from ringing that damn bell

Lots of memories of a different and way more interesting and fun Thailand from back then.  That was a time when a recovery of tourism post 97-99 Asian financial crisis occurred.  The govt at the time was more pro-tourism extending its welcome to adventure seeking people from everywhere.  Danny Boyle directed The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio released in March 2000 which helped the rebirth of tourism in Thailand after several heart breaking years of loss.

This pandemic is far worse than the 97-99 crisis.  TAT will need more than slick media and the help of Hollywood to dig out of this hole.  No plan will be the right plan so they better have an epic book of plans to launch when the world opens back up to tourism including a business continuity book of plans and back up plans.   Survival of the fittest is again the world's motto.

Stay safe everyone!

Keep in mind that after the Tsunami in 2004, the tourism arrivals took a dip. For a few months.
Within a year, they were back above the "pre-tsunami" numbers.

2 coups - barely a ripple on the total number of arrivals. Rising strength of the baht ? Barely a slowdown in the number of arrivals, which has progressively gotten higher year by year.

Nothing has been destroyed. Nothing has been drastically altered or changed in any way that would deter people from returning. The only slowdown will be on the those who haven't been earning anything during this time. They'll need time to replenish their accounts and get far enough ahead of the game to be able to afford a vacation.
And, most of those people will probably be the Chinese, at least in the beginning.

The ones who arrive in record numbers and spend very little.

Due to a very low high season for westerners, Pattaya has probably got to the destination where it was always heading to, and that was out pricing itself in the South East Asia tourism market, when compared to its competitors.  Eg. Vietnam.

In my opinion, many western tourists, including sex tourists, could look past the "cheap and nasty" of Pattaya and have a good time.  Now, the "cheap" is gone, that only leaves "nasty" and no one likes an "expensive and nasty" place to holiday.

Whilst the strong baht plays a role, in general, I think the the greedy Thai landlords played the biggest part.  They slowly raised rents here, which were pushed back onto the tourists, and they stretched the western tourism market to breaking point.  I think the past high season showed they finally found what the western tourist market was not prepared to pay.

When the virus crisis has finished, without a market correction, I can't see western tourists coming back here in the numbers we have seen in the past.

Led to believe that the owners of Siren Beer Bar Complex are building a new Beer Bar Complex, without a Boxing Ring.

The Pineapple hath many Spying Eyes. Good to hear we will soon be behind bars.

You forgot to add “get off my lawn!!”

Hope they are not demolishing The Beer Garden. One of my favourite places in Pattaya for reasonable food and a quiet drink.

I dont agree with putting the mongers out of the way, pattaya survives mainly because of it being a adult Disneyland saying that Walking Street lost its charm 20 years ago so yeah get rid of the place and do whatever to it ha ha

You might be sadly right. But it doesn't make sense to have gogo bars at a prime beach location.

This is exactly what makes it a prime beach location , sunbathing in the day getting laid and <deleted> in the night . The people who really only just come for sun and beaches have many many many other options with plenty of beaches with much cleaner water and sand. Or do you really think pattaya is (or ever was) a family resort ????

I wrote that it doesn't make sense that the Walking Street with its gogo bars is at a prime beach location. It could be somewhere else at a cheaper location and the people who want to see it still would go there. This stretch of beach that is blocked by nightlife now could be used in a better way.

For the amount of beach that would be freed up, it would hardly be worth it. Especially when that beach would almost instantly be crowded with jet skis, speed boats and lawn chair vendors, like everywhere else.

Assuming they didn't decide to use the area to get rid of all the rain water draining from the rest of the city. Or expand Bali Hai and have more (and/or bigger) boats and ferries going in/out of there.

Barring some calamity, I really can't see Walking Street going anywhere anytime soon.

As much as i like walking street it is a dump and it wants a good shake down, or you continue with the drunk parasites and the less than nice bar girls and the even less nicer ladyboys, knock down the beach side and have out in the sea breeze restaurants serviced from across the street, still have bars but it will be a long time before you need all the bars and all the girls, face Pattaya, Phuket are going to have to work hard for there money in the future.

Who cares about those bars, as long as the beer garden is OK but it to is 100% tourist dependant,.

Maybe the party is over for a few years.

When my eldest daughter was 6 she loved all the flashy lights in walking street but was surprised that so many girls wore bathing costumes when they didn't seem to be swimming! Walking Street attracts people even if they don't want to enter the agogos.

I am not against bars and nightlife. They should create a kind of Las Vegas for bar and nightlife lovers at a new location.

Why simply not go if you don't like?

I see your point.  What you are describing is what started LK Metro.  Now look at LK.

The problem is, it's not prime beach location because it's not a prime beach.

I would agree with you, if it was a very nice beach, but it's not.

Pattaya is the Las Vegas for nightlife and bars. Its what the town grew up around.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of other places around Thailand where you will find exactly what you want to turn Pattaya into.

Even the Vegas strip is outside Los Vegas.

The bar areas like Walking street attract lots of visitors , often tour groups  with the guy with the flag in front, just to see the scantily clad girls and the excitement of somewhere which is forbidden in their lives. Every city has a similar area, Amsterdam, Soho, Reeperbahn , Bangla road etc . Those visitors don’t spend anything just goggle at the naughtiness . I think the OP has good reasoning, maybe not out of the city, better access, but a bit more out of the public eye. Boyz Zone could also go there, you have to admit, these places are an eye sore in Pattaya ! They really don’t need to be where they are. Walking street with clean  indépendant  restaurants (. Not the rubbish chain ones you see everywhere) a bit more upmarket , they will attract people in the right setting. Shops, no indépendant fashion shops anywhere ! All my years in Phuket or Pattaya, I’ve never bought a dress or other fashion , it’s all the same rubbish sold everywhere . Terminal 21 has great ones on the top floors , but a city center needs shops. That’s why tourists spend so much time in the two Malls , there’s nothing elsewhere in town! ( doesn’t mean to say you can’t have some nice bars with pretty girls where everyone can have a drink ) .

Pattaya could have a nice look instead of a sordid one.
