Sheikhul Islam Office announces COVID-19 measures for mosques

BANGKOK(NNT)-The Sheikhul Islam Office of Thailand issued an announcement yesterday, allowing Muslims to attend prayers, but they must strictly follow guidelines against the spread of COVID-19.

According to the announcement, Islamic committee members or public health officers will measure people’s body temperatures before they are allowed to enter mosques, and alcohol-based hand sanitizers are to be placed at the entrance.

People are not permitted to perform ablutions inside the premises. Mosques must be cleansed and ventilated before and after each prayer session. Social distancing stickers are placed on the floor to make sure that Muslims stay at least two meters apart while praying. While inside the mosque, people still have to keep a safe distance between each other.

Muslims are advised to perform ablutions at their home and use their own prayer mats. They are encouraged to use hand sanitizers, provided by the mosque, wear protective masks at all times and refrain from touching each other. They can raise their hands and say "salam". Women and children are not allowed to attend prayers.

Today, provincial Islamic committees and related units discussed further measures to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

At least they admit, indirectly, that prayers won't protect them. Not sure the catholics would do so.

I'm not sure whether to be happy for the women, or to be surprised by the religion's proponents openly admitting its mediaeval misogyny.

Exactly, but it is 1441...........according to their calendar.

The catholic churches have been closed for a month now, services are being streamed live over the internet.

About 3 months too late!

Hardly.

The local mosque has been closed and the call to prayer silenced since mid March. These are measures to allow the reopening of mosques, not the first measure to restrict them.

Do keep up.

Does this mean that churches can re-open now? Genuine question.

I would assume so. I was surprised today when I heard the call to prayer from our local mosque, it's been closed for the last seven weeks, this announcement explains it. But if the mosques can open with restrictions, then the churches must be able to too. Hat Yai's Chinese temples and our Sikh Gurdwara too no doubt.

Whilst Moslems are keen to share the virus with all around, Buddhists are taking a rather more prudent approach:
