Trump says he is taking hydroxychloroquine as hedge against virus

U.S. President Donald Trump talks about taking daily doses of hydroxychloroquine pills as he addresses a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic meeting with restaurant executives and industry leaders beneath a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln in the State Dining Room at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 18, 2020. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he is taking hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug that he has touted despite medical warnings about its use, as a preventive medicine against the coronavirus.

"I've been taking it for the last week and a half. A pill every day," Trump told reporters.

Trump made the disclosure during a question-and-answer session with reporters during a meeting with restaurant executives about the impact of the virus.

Weeks ago Trump had promoted the drug as a potential treatment for the virus but subsequent studies found that it was not helpful.

Trump, 73, who is tested daily for the virus, said he had asked the White House physician if it was OK to take the drug, and the doctor told him, "well, if you'd like it."

The disclosure came as Moderna Inc <MRNA.O> reported progress in a potential vaccine for the virus. The only drug that has emerged as a potential treatment is Gilead Sciences Inc's <GILD.O> remdesivir, a drug reserved for hospital patients.

Fox News Channel, immediately after Trump's remarks, interviewed Dr. Bob Lahita, who cautioned people not to take hydroxychloroquine.

"There's no effect that we have seen and we have treated multiple patients with it," he said.

CORRECTED-Trump says he is taking hydroxychloroquine despite FDA warning

By Jeff Mason and Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump, in a surprise announcement, said on Monday he is taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventive medicine against the coronavirus despite medical warnings about the use of the malaria drug.

"I'm taking hydroxychloroquine," Trump told reporters. "I've been taking it for the last week and a half. A pill every day."

Trump volunteered the disclosure during a question-and-answer session with reporters as he met restaurant executives whose businesses are reeling from the impact of the virus.

Weeks ago Trump had promoted the drug as a potential treatment based on a positive report about its use against the virus, but subsequent studies found that it was not helpful. The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about its use.

In an April 24 statement, the FDA said it is “aware of reports of serious heart rhythm problems” in patients with COVID-19 treated with hydroxychloroquine or an older drug, chloroquine.

Trump, 73, who is tested daily for the virus, said he had asked the White House physician if it was OK to take the drug, and the doctor told him, "well, if you'd like it."

The president, a well-known germaphobe, has nonetheless refused to wear a protective mask in the West Wing.

The disclosure came as Moderna Inc <MRNA.O> reported progress in a potential vaccine for the virus. The only drug that has emerged so far as a potential treatment is Gilead Sciences Inc's <GILD.O> remdesivir.

Fox News Channel, immediately after Trump's remarks, interviewed Dr. Bob Lahita, chairman of medicine at St. Joseph University Hospital, who cautioned people not to take hydroxychloroquine.

"There's no effect that we have seen and we have treated multiple patients with it," he said.

Trump said he also took a single dose of azithromycin, an antibiotic which is meant prevent infection. In conjunction with hydroxychloroquine, Trump said he was taking zinc.

“All I can tell you is so far I seem to be OK,” Trump said.

Lines will not clean away all his self tanning lotion. He needs to shower in Vim to get rid of the orange glow...

From what I have read, hydroxychloroquine has proved very efficacious as a prophylaxis measure. Has had some success in low to moderate severity CV 19 cases if taken with Zinc and Azithromycin and has had very poor results in cases of moderate severity and above. I think most of the testing has been on moderate and more severe cases.

I hope he is washing it down with a bit of Lysol.

This is more likely:

1) 45 is lying, is not taking  it, but feels humiliated because he made a fool of himself and is covering for his painfully fragile ego, plus he couldn't care less if his goobers take it and they die

2) His doctor is just giving 45 sugar pills, but 45 doesn't know it

Of course, given his obesity and terrible cholesterol profile, he is a prime candidate for suffering the worst consequences of hydroxychloroquine, and Pence and other Administration folks see no real harm or loss in that possibility

Please show a link to research into prophylaxis use of hydrochloride against covid-19.

Lannarebirth, I am not quoting you, your post may be deleted due to not allowed videos.

That is almost 2 hours of video, so again, is there any research on hydrochloride as a covid-19 prophylaxis?

When people use the term "45" in protest to Trump... Massive eyeroll.

I don't believe him until the doctor who is prescribing and administering the drug publicly declares that it is so, and even then I'd not be sure. The man is nothing but a pathological liar without shame. I'd check the sky before I'd believe him if he said the sun was shining. ????

Is Trump inviting discussion on what pharmaceuticals he’s using, I do hope so.

Coming soon:

'and I'm drinking a glass of antiseptic a day'.

'and I'm eating one face mask a day'.

Yes. The research is shown in the video. If you care to see it and you think it may be deleted, you probably ought to click the links now. Watch at your leisure.

Almost 2 hours of video and no indication at all. Sorry, no. Not even a source of the video in your post.

No indication of what? Sure there's a source. You can look at it or not, I don't care.

Does anybody get the feeling Trump says these sort of things just to wind up the left? He has done this consistently since winning in 2016. It is a tactic long known by pro poker players, to get your opponent on tilt and watch them melt down and lose everything. Trump has done it so well, that we are the eve of an election and the democrats haven't even calmed down enough to find a real candidate to run against Trump. 4 years of extreme tilt. Job well done!

Err, it's posted on TVF.

If you live in Thailand you must surely see some semblance of similarities...

Congratulations to you, you just scored a couple of votes.

At the expense of making him look like an imbecile, he did well. Most lefts are used to his lobotomised rambling and just brush this off as another of his malarkey.

Don't know whether it answers your question one way or the other but I note the New England Journal of Medicine has quite a good article on the research of HCQ. Makes a good read if nothing else.????

I have recently started taking a new medicine called ‘Snake Oil’.

Seems to be working quite well at thee moment, as I am currently exhibiting no signs of the Covid19 virus.

It is also good for all other viruses/illnesses/injuries but apparently not too good for the snakes, as they have to be boiled to extract this magical oil.

Hope he is also doing his high-powered flashlight treatment in a convenient orifice.
