Is it looked down upon in this country to ride pillion as a man on a motorbike behind a girl?

I can barely balance a bicycle so in the interest of staying alive and valuing my health I never touch any motorbikes in Thailand (or anywhere else for that matter.) However, my car has broken down so we (me and my Thai girl) have to go around on a motorbike. Obviously, I let her ride the thing and sit safely behind.

I got a lot of stares and heads turning from other drivers and passers-by on the road, and some very rude treatment at a couple places. At first I wondered if it were the usual run of the mill racism (I am dark skinned) but moving around on a motorbike while seated behind a woman really does seem to exacerbate the negative interest. Why exactly is this such a bad thing in the eyes of the public that I don't have a death wish and let the more experienced rider pilot the motorcycle? Is it viewed as less masculine? Or is it an unusual or undesirable role/duty for the Thai female?

Never given it the slightest thought.

Think you maybe being a bit over conscious, don't think anyone bothers about it. If they are could be jealous.

Does your dark skin annoy some Thai people when you walk around on your own?

 

If the answer is yes then I expect that "those sort of people" (ie some Thai people) would probably be extra annoyed if they saw you pressed up close, as a pillion rider, to one of "their" women.

 

That's what "those sort of people" are like, the world over.

 

Nothing to do with her being the driver and you being the passenger, or any other convention concerning mens/womens "proper" roles.

I am not of African extraction so the outright hostility is somewhat lesser (I hope), most Thais have a hard time telling where I'm from based on my appearance alone. However it's fairly obvious that I am not white/caucasian.

It could be for some, as I also wear a gold chain. But the evil eye isn't just from Thais but even White people (who I imagine are less susceptible to gold chain triggered envy) for some reason. It's weird really. I've never experienced this level of distaste or unspoken contempt and scornful facial expressions. I'm very sensitive to these vibes and don't think I'm wrong.

It's not a problem riding on the back of a scooter with a women driving it. 

 

I can't drive at all, so often get a lift on the back of a friend's bike, and most of my friends are female. 

 

Never in many years living here have I got evil looks of anyone for being the passenger. 

 

Maybe it's in your head, because you feel embarrassed? Or if it's true, maybe you should get a change of clothes or image change?

Not really, not so much that you'd get outright hostility. 'They' might view you as being down-at-heel and slightly beta-male being driven about by a Doris, then there's the stigma of being with a Thai lady of course none of which 'they'd' really notice if you were in a car. However, the overriding factor here is that you are dark skinned. As you probably know, Thais can be a bit sharp where skin colour is concerned... add in Thai lady girlfriends on motorbikes etc......

Whatever you do... keep your weight forward... do not lean back.. it takes the weight off the front wheel and you can even tip over backwards..  this happened to my wife a few years ago.. a friend got on behind her and he was too embarrassed to sit close... he leaned back and over they went.. 

the only problem i have had with it was comfort.

on a bike like an Aerox (and a PCX) then if you are tall or heavy in any way then it's not comfortable at all

on something like a Honda Wave or Scoopy then it's not an issue but its still weird because I'm much taller than most people (191cm)

 

don't lean back is definitely a proper answer, I vouch for that.

Maybe it's the bike they are looking at...or maybe you have an exceptionally beautiful girlfriend

40+ years ago, I had an occasion or two to transport an English VSO volunteer across town in Loei, sitting side saddle on my bike. She weighed twice what I did.  Talk about lean angles and counter balancing, woof!

Did she check you for errant boogers when you were leaving the house?

I only ever let my wife ride the bike when I had a broken collarbone. Even then I felt uncomfortable having to rely on someone else to get around.
My life philosophy is: "What you don't know, you can learn" and I would take it as a personal challenge to learn riding. 

Definitely the gold chain around your neck. Try silver next time.

I have my own (slightly bigger) bike which is for me alone and I've ridden various 'big bikes' for about 50 years now. My wife has her bike which I never use and, for the very short trips when we're both on it, she drives, I ride pillion. I hate semi-automatic bikes. 

 

When I was about 18, I had a quite busty girlfriend who loved riding pillion. One day she was wearing just a light button-up dress and a pair of knickers, no bra. The wind force tore her dress open and everyone - except me - got to enjoy the sight of this pretty girl half-naked on the back of my bike. I think she quite enjoyed her bit of exhibitionism 'cos she wasn't a shy girl! I didn't realise this was happening and was quite peeved to have missed the show as she managed to button-up again before we stopped ???? .

Could be because they think you are stupid for flaunting it - depending on where you are many reported instances of people on bikes having gold chains ripped off.

 

Otherwise could it be you are not wearing a mask.......?

In Pattaya, some "win" are female.

 

I've often wondered how many passengers "grab a hold".   ????
