WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Wednesday there had been no sign yet of an increase in coronavirus cases from two weeks of nationwide protests over police misconduct and racism.

"What I can tell you is that, at this point, we don't see an increase in new cases now, nearly two weeks on from when the first protests took effect," Pence said in an interview on Fox Business Network.

"Many people at protests were wearing masks and engaging in some social distancing," he said.

Protesters thronged the streets of U.S. cities and spread around the world following the May 25 death of a 46-year-old black man, George Floyd, after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease expert on the White House coronavirus task force that Pence chairs, has expressed concern about the protests taking place during the coronavirus pandemic.

"When you get congregations like we saw with the demonstrations, that's taking a risk," Fauci said Wednesday in an interview on ABC.

Fauci said on Friday the mass protests were a "perfect setup" for spreading the virus.

Now who should we believe? The top-expert Fauci or the politician and religious nutter Pence and his boss?

It's amazing that some people still believe what Trump and Pence tell them.

Lacking a post demonstration/rioting spike indicates transmission isn't happening in crowds. Therefore, stay at home orders are of no use other than to shut down the economy. Those who are at risk should be kept safe, as for the rest of us life should return ASAP.

The shutdown only made sense at first when we had no idea what we were dealing with.

In pences defense I’m sure he’s under orders to make happy talk he’s a good little cowed lap dog imo all the tear gas pepper spray yelling chanting body contact proximitie to each other with an airborne virus is unfortunately going to cause more deaths and illnesses stay safe and healthy everyone

Using facts on some people is a waste of time.

Trump supporters: "You libs can NOT make us stay at home, avoid rallies or wear masks!"

Trump non-supporters: "Us libs are counting on it."

Well it would be the perfect excuse for anyone dumb enough to believe it. The second wave of virus will all be down to the BLM current protestors, that is what Pence is setting us up for.  Nothing to do with ending the lockdowns too soon of course, or earlier the white nationalists protesting that they couldn't get a haircut (Poor dears) etc, as they waved their guns around.

Sadly for Pence the horse may have bolted, the polls are awful for the GOP and when you lose supporters it is not so easy to get them back.

Therefore you need to stay under your bed with a blanket over your head. That's not the way I want to live.

It is too early to say. Less than 14 days since the biggest protests.

Also, the effect will not be evident just from those who were at the protests (a demographic that skews young) , but from people  that they in turn may infect, which will take yet more time.

On the plus side, a lot wore masks, and it was outdoors and weather fairly warm.

Loosing the protesters would be ironic, unless they infect Grandma, which would be sad.

Pence didn't consider that some DC National Guardsmen tested positive for Covid19 following protests. They were supposedly required to practiced social distancing and wear PPE.

Military were screened before deployed to protests. Then screened again before leaving their assigned place of duty.

Thus, the only source for the infections would have been from protestors unless they were infecting each other. Pictures of guardsmen during the protests showed they were not following CDC guidelines to protect from infection.

Up to today only 114,452 Covid death in the USA. Yeah, all looks fine...

https://news.google.com/covid19/map?hl=en-US&mid=/m/09c7w0&gl=US&ceid=US:en

Closing in on 2 million cases in the U.S. thus far, and the NYT reporting that CV cases are currently rising in 21 of 50 different states.

Also, similar info from Johns Hopkins in their June 10 daily CV update:

US COVID-19 INCIDENCE Several weeks after US states began to relax social distancing measures and “stay at home” orders as well as celebrations over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a number of states are reporting increasing COVID-19 incidence. Analysis published by NPR identifies 23 US states and Puerto Rico with increasing COVID-19 incidence over the past 2 weeks, including 5 states with more than double the daily incidence compared to 2 weeks ago.

The WHO reported more than 136,000 new cases [worldwide] on June 7, the highest daily global total to date, and the majority of cases were reported by countries in the Americas and South Asia. Multiple WHO officials emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance and continuing to implement effective social distancing and epidemic control measures.

The Texas governor was a YUGE proponent of "EFF Y'all, we're gonna open and see what happens." Here's a 9 June headline from a Texas website:  "Number of Texans hospitalized with coronavirus hits all-time high as experts say cases are likely to continue increasing"

OOPS! That's what happens when you don't listen to the experts and listen to politicians whose only interest is in hiding numbers.

That's exactly what's happening in a lot of southern states, often places led by Republican governors (e.g. Texas, Arizona, Florida, etc) who rushed out to start dropping all restrictions once Trump publicly proclaimed the coast was clear.

And very few states at large have ever even complied with what was supposed to be the Trump Admin. federal guidelines for being able to relax CV restriction -- a two-week period of consistently declining CV incidence. They put that out as a "guideline" and then they promptly ignored it at the federal level and pretty much everywhere else.

Meanwhile, caught this blurb in a non TH government controlled tech news article today. Very interesting, considering that officially there are very few CV cases supposedly in TH hospitals right now.

The robots run on faster 5G connections, and help to reduce the risk of contact infection, according to Dr. Sukrom Chi-Charoen, deputy medical director of Rajavithi Hospital in Bangkok. “These robots are very useful, particularly at a time when we are short of self-protection sets. Even though we lack surgical masks and personal protective equipment suits, we can do our jobs as [the robots allow us to minimize] direct contact with patients,” said Dr. Sukrom.

After all the weeks and months of supposedly declining patient counts and reported infections, one of the top/major government run hospitals in BKK still is short of protective masks and suits for their CV-treating staff???

OK, who's bogarting all the N95 masks these days???

Also from Johns Hopkins in their June 10 daily COVID report:

Texas reported record numbers for COVID-19 hospitalizations this week, as efforts continue to relax social distancing. In addition to elevated daily incidence, Texas reported 5 of its 6 highest daily totals for COVID-19 hospitalizations over the past 5 days, including its first day with more than 2,000 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Texas’ test positivity is also increasing, up from a low of 4.27% on May 26 to 7.55% on June 6 (currently 6.66%). On June 3, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the state would move into Phase 3 of its recovery plan, which allows businesses to increase to 50% of their normal capacity.

Yeah, when you look at the source, it causes people with thinking capability to roll their eyes; and Dr. Birx has learned to lie admirably with a straight face.

And all that is obviously no surprise at all.

Now we can guess if Trump and his minions are surprised or if they just don't care about all those dead people.

So does everyone understand the difference between cases and deaths? What if the government started reporting on every single disease and published the results?  No one would go out.

How many of these "cases" are very low in the viral count and asymptomatic and don't pass on the virus?  the scare mongers want to keep instilling fear, instead of telling people to get their immune systems in order.

Just watching Bill Mahr and he basically said the same thing, that is, why aren't governments telling people to boost their immune systems.  He had a pretty good story of saying, what would your doctor say before covid if you decided to lock yourself down, day drink, and eat unhealthy.

What matter is the ifr of those who contract the virus, not the number of cases.
