Thailand eyes tourists from China, New Zealand to fill its ‘travel bubble’

The authorities will discuss the possibility of creating a “travel bubble” in collaboration with countries that have been able to bring Covid-19 infections under control, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Friday (June 12).

The two countries currently being considered are China and New Zealand.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said that creating this travel bubble was possible if every arrival into Thailand is tested for Covid-19.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said this move was being taken into consideration after CCSA said it may open the country to international flights after June 30.

Tourists using this travel bubble will be required to have “fit to fly” certification and hold a medical certificate that is valid for no more 72 hours.

Phiphat added that the stimulus package for tourism, expected to be implemented from July to October, will be discussed on June 16.

“The tourism and sports minister will discuss details of the package with the Commerce Ministry before it is proposed to the Cabinet,” he said. “The aim will be to provide people a Bt3,000 subsidy encouraging them to travel to other provinces. This is expected to cost about Bt12 billion.”

A similar Bt2.4-billion package had been launched to help 1.2 million people in the tourism industry who were affected by Covid-19 outbreak.

As long as they keep those Chinese people in a fully contained rolling plastic bubble away from the general public and CM all is well.

  • There will have to be one other country at least when China is allowed back in. If it's only China and there's a spike of Covid 19, that would look bad and where to put the blame?

In my travels throughout Thai, I very rarely run into NZ tourists. This is just a smoke screen to cover the zillion Chinese about to be allowed back. Make it look like Thai gov are not just allowing only Chinese.

To add to my previous post re NZ and China etc. Recently AU put forward investigation looking into origin of covid-19 to UN.

Straight away China described AU as chewing gum on their boot needing scraping off. Couple of days later banned lot of beef imports along with huge tariffs on barley (of all things).

Japan week or so back listed counties that they are looking at for "bubble" NZ,AU , Vietnam and several others in their thinking.

China was not on that list. Why

The whole point of a travel bubble is for freedom of movement without quarantine or testing. If every arrival is tested for COVID-19 it totally defeats the object!

America.

Stands to reason.

Welcome to the New China. Thailand!

Can't fault them for trying to salvage what remains of their tourist industry, and everyone has to start somewhere, but....

Yes, and in that kight I don’t understand why one would need a ‘fit to fly’ certificate and a medical certificate if everybody is tested upon arrival anyhow.....,.,

Some of the Thais tell me that Germany will probably also be "in". Lowest infection rate in western Europe- and after all, we already had some kind of "bubble" the last couple of months here near Zugspitze.

Germany is having around same numbers of new cases as others western european nations, I don't understand why it's considered "safer".

Is your name Rasputin? Been asleep 30+ years. Take 2 random western countries.. UK ~ 900K tourists to Thai.

AU ~ 750K.

I can't find data for NZ. Most of them go to Gold Coast Oz.

Give me a break travel bubble Thai, China and NZ.

Of course the Chinese government always tells the truth :cheesy:. I wouldn't take them saying they are Corona free as gospel.

However I think the Chinese will be going to LOS in large numbers soon as the high speed railway is completed.

What NZ person is going to go to LOS when they have to go into 14 days quarantine on return?

I wasn't aware that enough NZ tourists went there before to make a difference anyway.

If you are talking about NZ tourists you can't go many places in LOS. I've only seen a few in all my years in LOS.

Besides, Thailand, I can't think of any other country that would have China as a " travel bubble country"

Yes. I think you are right about that. We (NZ) are only 8 days away from the total elimination of the virus (you'd have to Google the definition of that. It is complicated but it is based on 28 days of NO cases after the normal 14 days of there being no one with the virus. Very confusing)  and so I cannot see NZ wanting to allow tourists to Asia (any country) to return, without a lot of problems,  as most of the virus in both NZ and Aust. was from people entering the country. I'm sure if you did go to Thailand from NZ you'd have to go into quarantine for 14 days when you returned. Who would want to do that? Undoubtedly NZ will enter into a travel bubble very soon with Australia, and with the Cook Islands and Fiji and any other Pacific Is. nation that has been virus free but I cannot see any SE Asian country being included for quite some time. Just my thoughts.

China does not have 100% control over infections as I write. And New Zealand's population will have no impact on tourism numbers in Thailand

I don’t think Kiwis are an ideal target group.

Rumour has it they actually hibernate, only appearing once every 4 years, making a lot of noise for a few weeks and then quietly disappearing again after the inevitable choke.

Doesn’t sound like a great business plan to rebuild a tourist industry.

I have a handful of Kiwi friends here in Thailand and love them. Non-boozers and polite.

NZ can stand proud re their measures during this nightmare. Think is was March 19 they closed all entries apart from NZ nationals. Think Vietnam also same. AU followed next day. BTW took Thailand untill March 26.

I don't know about bubble anytime soon Au with NZ. Currently Qld has closed borders to other states of AU. QLD being #1 destination for kiwis
