KTM 390 Adventure

Hello  Petrol heads .

Does anyone know if and when the KTM 390 Adventure will be available in Thailand?   I have email every KTM dealer in Thailand  regarding this model and surprise surprise no response ????   But I did get on response from a KTM facebook page in Pattaya ... "I  no have "  so I asked can you order one for me ..answer = " Can't order",

Any help will be appreciated

KTM was in Thailand, then left, then came back, then... I dunno. Gist is: dealerships scarse, bikes overpriced because of imports... can't even see pricelist or where dealers are on the official KTM Thailand website. Questionable how serious they are about Thailand. Buy at your own risk.

KTM now , are as Ducati were 5 years ago. Few dealers , little dealer support , difficult spares situation and overpriced. Ducati moved forward and are now selling very well. KTM are still hit with crazy import taxes so they havent invested in a large dealer network or spares inventory. If you REALLY REALLY want one , be prepared to pay , and suffer difficult/scarce dealers/spares/technical help.

Ducati was 5 years ago way way way ahead of where KTM is now. They had a dealer network spanning most parts of Thailand and were producing bikes in Thailand so were not overpriced, many models costing more or less the same as overseas. They maybe even have less dealers now than 5 years ago? Not sure. But really can't compare the Ducati and KTM situations in Thailand. I doubt KTM will ever start producing bikes in Thailand as they are focused on India and are owned by an Indian company. And just because of that they will never get a good foothold in Thailand because of import duties.

Yes. Fair point. If you buy any "rare" make of  bike , you will face problems. Some people will deal with these , while others wont. Now some Ducati are built in Thailand , the import tax is no longer a problem. KTM wont invest in Thailand until this import problem is sorted.

If you're going to use a bike seriously, you need a good dealer network - which rules out KTM.

 

If you wanted a KTM 390 for serious off-road use - get a Honda CRF Rally.  If more interested in on-road performance, get a Honda CB500X or Kawasaki Versys X300, or even stretch a bit to the 650.

 

If you wanted an all-rounder, get a Himalayan, and if not in a rush wait to see the Himalayan 650.

 

If you wanted an Indian built European brand - get a BMW 310.

 

You are spoiled for choice in the lightweight adventure market, so why go for an electronically complex import with a suspect dealer network?

It seems lots of people here pretend they know about KTM in Thailand - but they don't.

 

I have a KTM Duke 390 since about 2 years and I am very happy with the bike. It's as good as in many reviews described and shown. As far as I know the Adventure is not too much different from the Duke so I expect that it is a good bike. I am sure you are able to read the reviews and watch the videos.

 

About KTM in Thailand: BurnRubber was the local distributor until about a year ago. Now KTM has a new partner in Thailand I think since beginning of this year.

They were supposed to open a new shop about 2 or 3 months ago. It seems that was delayed, possibly because of Covid-19.

BurnRubber still has some service places so it's still possible to get KTM service in Thailand.

 

Now about riding a KTM in Thailand? The 390 has modern electronics, i.e. throttle by wire. If the electronic fails the bike won't run. Even if you would be an electronic engineer there is little you can do yourself in such a case. So in case of a problem you need a qualified KTM service center with the right tools, electronic, people. Even with the new distributor I don't imagine that there will be many KTM service places all over Thailand.

Having said that, I don't know how many service centers for medium and big bikes from other companies exist all over Thailand. I know you can get a Honda Click services anywhere. But how about a big Honda or Yamaha, etc., can you service them anywhere up country? I don't know. Maybe others have comments about that.

Personally I wouldn't bother with a KTM in Thailand. It has all the risks and hassles of owning some rare piece of exotica, without the joy of owning something exotic.

 

I briefly looked at getting a KTM250 SX-F but at 43x,xxx Baht it simply wasn't worth it when I could get a KX250F for 299,000 Baht with all the benefits of the Kawasaki support network. It's my fourth Kawasaki in Thailand and they've all been bullet proof. 

 

If I was in India I'd own a KTM, they're cheap and supported there. But in Thailand I'd stick to the locally produced and supported brands. Which is a shame because the 390 Adventure looks a great bike.

Don't think they are bring a 650 Himalayan out ...according to reports coming out of India ...the Name of "Sherpa" has been copyrighted and linked to the Royal Enfield brand name ...and the a new ADV 650 will be called The "Sherpa" ...To be  launched mid 2021 to mid 2022.. looking forwards to seeing  the Himalayans big brother that could be a great bike if it follows in the footsteps of its little baby brother .

I bought my bike in A-Square (basically Sukhumvit Soi 26) in Bangkok. That place closed.

The I tried to contact the dealer (I had the email address from when I bought it). No sucess.

Then I contacted the KTM head-office in Austria and after a while I got a reply.

They told me what I wrote above and they told me there is a service center in Rama 5. I went there I think in March for the service of my bike. I am pretty sure that place still exist.

I was able to get the contact details from the internet so anybody should be able to get the details for any other location in Thailand. I won't publish a name in the open forum for privacy reasons but if you want it send me a PM and I send you a name and contact details which I have.

 

This is the map and info about the Rama 5 dealer. Their service center is about 500m away from the sales center.

About the cost of a bike: I paid for my bike about 300k. Not cheap but I like it. I think many of us don't want to pay more than necessary but if at the end of the day we pay 200k for an ok bike or 300k for a bike we really like then I guess many will pay those 300k. Compared to powerful cars even nice bikes are relative cheap.

That's exactly the problem. Many old dealerships closed and now you have to write to Austria to find out what dealers and service centers exist at this moment in time. The link to find a dealer on the KTM Thailand website doesn't work.

 

In the past many dealers tried to carry one brand but there's not enough demand to carry the associated costs imho. Even in western countries many dealers have more than one brand which allows them to keep lower volume brands. This is slowly starting to happen in Thailand now. The Ducati dealer in Phuket started to sell also Royal Enfields. I believe this is the only sustainable way forward. There's not enough demand for KTM, Aprilia, Royal Enfied or even BMW in Phuket to warrant their own separate dealerships but if they can piggyback on an existing mainstream one it becomes possible. Of course the mainstream brands don't like that idea so they try to prevent it and there is no support from the law to protect dealerships ????

For me personally that would be too much but I can totally understand that you bought it. I agree that if you really want a KTM then you can go for it, at least if you are around BKK it's not so bad to get service and hey, that they are available at all in Thailand is pretty cool.

I have to correct myself. I don't know why I had 300K on my mind. I actually paid 210k. And I think a year later the bikes were sold cheaper because the dealership closed.

took the duke into rama 5 service center a couple weeks ago. great service. was in hat yai last august and the ktm shop was still open there as well.

Honda has nothing to do with sheep they have led the way in every motorcycle type class KTM always a 5th or 6th KTM can not compete with Japanese tech.

In Thailand KTM dealers are a mess if you can find one.

A few years ago, the price of ktm's reduced dramatically as a trade deal was struck between india & thailand ....

 

At the time a Duke 390 (original Generation 1 model), which was india made - went down from 340,000b to 199,000 Baht - and people (including myself) flocked to buy ....

 

Then the Gen 2 390 came out with loads of improvements - and the price went up to 210,000 baht, but many dealers sold them for the original 199,000b ..... .....

 

comparing a silimar priced Honda 500F to a Duke 390 would be like comparing supermarket ice cream to Ben and Jerries chocko mint chip ......

 

No one knows why the original importers "burn Rubber" stopped, but Vroom are set to start importing the indian made 200 / 390 range soon, and i assume a dealer network is already in the pipeline.....

 

i was at KTM Pattaya last week buying a service kit for my Gen 2  390 and asked the lady what was going on with "Vroom" and she said their launch had been delayed because of the virus.....

 

Hopefully the 390 Adventure will be available in Thailand later in the year ..... And if its anything like the 390 duke, it will knock rivals like the 500X into next week......

 

Also there is a new range of twin cyl, 60hp, "490" bikes (with 5 different models, including a supermoto) that will be available early 2021, and being indian made, will be imported into Thailand by Vroom, without import taxes ...... That new model will, imho be and absolute game changer ....

 

Some exiting times ahead for ktm in thailand over the next few months .....

ps - if you watch the video below - at 3m 45 sec - you hear the tester use a word you rarely hear from tests on similar bikes from Honda, suzuki and Yamaha etc:

Ah was not aware of there being a zero import duty agreement with India. Do you have more details? That would be a gamechanger for KTM.
