A force of more than 100 men including police and local foundations were searching for two men who went missing after their fiberglass boat overturned in choppy conditions off the coast at Khao Takiap, Hua Hin last night.

The men are both staff members at the Chom Kluen Hotel and had invited a relative to join them on the fishing trip after work.

Thanit, 35, said they were about 400-500 meters offshore when large waves struck and the boat was overturned.

He managed to grab onto the lid of a foam box and was desperately trying to reach his uncle Yortchai and a man called Klaa.

But it proved impossible to help them in the conditions and he eventually made it to the beach at the hotel where he called the authorities.

The search continued until 2am when it was called off until morning.

So tragic when just a couple of inexpensive safety precautions could have saved them.

I was walking home last night past the rescue squad on Soi 70 when they came screaming out with two trailers with small boats on them.  Now I understand what they were doing.
