Seven Pattaya pubs flouting smoking bans and promoting alcohol consumption

The Thai authorities have warned the public they will be fined 5,000 baht if they light up cigarettes or e-cigarettes in pubs and bars.

And they have told the pub owners they will be fined 50,000 baht for allowing smoking and face more trouble for advertising alcohol and offering cut price drinking deals.

Thailand has strict rules on lighting up in public and advertising alcohol consumption. These are under increasing scrutiny in the Covid-19 era.

Daily News reported that DPM and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul - famous for his outbursts against "dirty" non-mask wearing "farangs" and higly publicised flouting of his own regulations - sent in his health authorities to ensure that the post lockdown Covid-19 regulations were being followed at entertainment venues and places of prostitution throughout the whole country.

In Pattaya they were not.

A team of alcohol and smoking groups headed by infectious diseases expert Dr Suwannachai Wattanacharoenchai found seven pubs brazenly flouting the smoking ban and alcohol promotion laws in Pattaya on Friday night.

He urged both the public and bar and pub owners to follow the rules so there will not be an increase in Covid-19 cases. He stressed that people should not let down their guard.

Smokers can be fined 5,000 baht under Article 42 and bar owners 50,000 baht under Article 43.

Regarding alcohol, pubs and bars in Pattaya were advertising drinking with cut price and special deals. This is a no-no in Thailand.

The authorities are gathering information for prosecutions.

Dr Suwannachai said people can call 1422 for further information on what is and is not allowed.

Another <deleted> draconian measure.

Elsewhere in the modern world, competitors in many businesses reduce prices to try to get a larger share of the market, and it works, because competition is usually good for business.

However, this is a no-no in backward Thailand, and it's unelected leader.

Oh dear, Mr. Dirty Farang fear mongering again.

It would make a difference to show some understanding in the current situation with its economic impact.

For me this behaviour is a collapse of governance and ruling through fear and intimidation.

The alcohol control law that bans these practices came into effect in 2008. Who was the 'unelected leader' at that time.

Beer promotions, as in buckets, but one get one free, happy hours etc., were not banned in 2008, and were used by many bars to attract custom, up until the mild Covid outbreak earlier this year.

I don't know where you got your information from ?

From the alcohol control act 2008.

selling alcoholic beverages by discount as sales promotion was banned.

(Section 30)

Yes was a common practice but did not make it legal.

Seven Pattaya pubs flouting smoking bans

Bars have been paying the police to ignore the smoking ban since day one.

This sounds like some of the recently reopened bars maybe haven’t been quick enough to pay the required smoking bribes…which have, in all probability, been significantly raised to make up for lost police revenue.

And a ban on "Advertising alcohol consumption" is just one more coercive shakedown to keep the police fat and happy.

It's obvious the police are setting an example of anyone who isn’t showing the right attitude. Good Thai citizens are expected to fully cooperate with official extortion.

This is a no-no in Thailand!  So is the biggest money making personal services industry...

Laws in Thailand are ripe for exploitation by corrupt officials...

a bar promotng alcohol, the cheek of it.how dare they.as for smoking isnt it time to wrn them and move on,this is a death star for the bar restaurant business and the stupidity and hypocrisy of these fools is beyond belief, the girls sell themselves thats illegal but quite blatant .this is absurd, the world can see it and they made their mind up about what kind of people act like that a long time ago.travel around and you will see.dont brag about living here and just listen to what people think, some is newspaper sensationalism but a lot of its the plain truth

Read the article.

This was not the Police, but people from the Health & Infectious Dept

I thought e-cigs was 40 000 up and an arrest. or 20 000 "donation" on the spot

They found only 7? how many did they visit ? 7?

It is impossible for bars and clubs to follow all of the 22 rules checklist.

Some at least make an effort, many just put a hand gel and its done with

No problem with the no smoking. Totally agree. In the Aus and the UK they allow competition and the stupid ban on advertising here is worse than living in Muslim country.

Australian pubs and bars are not permitted to advertise cheap drinks or happy hour prices for the sale of alcohol.

Happy hours and drink promotions. Drink promotions and happy hours may contribute to excessive and rapid consumption of alcohol if not adequately controlled. ... You cannot advertise happy hours outside your premises.Jul 11, 2019

That's how you treat children !

If you want to be treated like a small child, which is obviously appropriate according to your posts in this forum, then it's fine.

Let the adults have their alcohol if they want to - they are old enough to decide for themselves !

Aren,t these people just lovable ? Don,tya wanna just hug them and squeeze them until the 1cc of grey matter oozes outta their ear ????
