webfact Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Bangkok: Seventy five tourists evacuated as sightseeing boat sinks in the Chao Praya Picture: Daily News Quick thinking actions of a boat captain were hailed as helping to save the lives of 75 Thai and foreign tourists after a three story pleasure boat sank at a private pier on the Chao Praya river last night. The "High Season 1" had earlier set sail from a hotel in the Rama 3 area further south. When it reached the Phra Pokklao (Rama 7) bridge the captain realised something was amiss as it started to list. He docked at a privately owned jetty nearby in the area of Soi Somdej Chao Praya. A local official Jakree Sriraksa, 31, said that the vessel was still afloat when he arrived and all passengers and crew were evacuated. It appears to have sprung a leak on the right side though an investigation is underway. Pak Klong San police were on the scene. Daily News said that the vessel is owned by High Season Resort on Koh Kud in Trat province in the east of Thailand. Popular Post Colabamumbai Posted August 3, 2020 Popular Post Posted August 3, 2020 You can always depend on a safe time in Thailand with the highest safety standards. How many life jackets on board? 5
rtco Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Welcome to Thailand where we are "SAFETY FIRST" ... well according to all the signage we are anyway 1
yellowboat Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Is boat surveyor a Thai only job? It would seem that vacancies are not being filled. Some of those gawd awful fishing boat skippers seem to be able to stay afloat for years. Why do pleasure boats have some much trouble in Thailand? 2

I am not a marine Safety Engineer, but if you have a oat that is 3 storys high above the Water Line with a Draft of maybe only 1 Metre, then its top heavy. Probably built this way with the sole objective of packing in the Tourists for maximum profit over Safety. 5 1
Brunolem Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Foreign tourists??? I suppose these were tourists who had been stranded in Thailand since March, and not recently arrived tourists, which would be impossible, at least officially... 2
VocalNeal Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 sad looks like a nice converted rice barge. 1 1
holy cow cm Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Thailand. Where you can experience a boat sinking or have someone float your boat all in one night.
Elkski Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Talk is cheap! Thai politicians need to pull their heads out and do their jobs. 1

Can't make this up!! Been a bad week for boats in Thailand, what with this sinking and the Samui ferry mishap the other day... But then again, EVERY week is probably a bad week for boats in Thailand, if you value your life. 1
Parsve Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 A sign of the maybe not so new "normal" in Thailand"
steven100 Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 yesterday ferries with garbage truck sinking and now this ... are the boats not safe ? 1
sammieuk1 Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Thank god for quick thinking captains TAT nearly had to adjust their arrival/departure figures with some more horizontal ones????
Grusa Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 I can't help thinking the "private pier" owner will be mightily pi$$ed at the pile of junk (pun intended) blocking his jetty!
Skeptic7 Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Yep...most dangerous roads (and waterways?) in the world, but none of that matters as they're Covid Free!!! 1
poloshirt Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 It appears some members of this forum seem to delight in the misery of others. Sometimes they crack a joke in bad taste. 1
GBW Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 kudos to the Captain and crew, everyone safe and well. But Im guessing the mooring fees might be a little exe ???? Cheers GBW
soalbundy Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 This will go down well in China. TAT...yeah but nobody died so we're safe right. 1
katana Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Does a look a little top heavy with it not taking much to move its centre of balance to an unstable position.

torturedsole Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 In the immortal [edited] words of B. A. Baracus, "I aint gettin' on no Thai rust bucket boat, Hannibal." Seriously, who embarks these deathtraps? I'd take one look at that boat and my mind would be made up.
Duckster Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 I can’t imagine a worse body of water to sink in. One gulp of that soupy vile cesspool would certainly lead to tragic consequences. The only advantage that the river would provide is all the buoyant trash and debris floating on the surface that would help a stranded survivor stay afloat.
