I recently noticed a construction that seemed to consist of stainless steel joists. They were welded in place.

I thought that welding stainless steel is a danger to health?

Does anyone have experience with this in Thailand? I might be interested.... how do they compare pricewise?

Welding stainless steel produces gases containing nickel and hexavalent chromium. On inhalation these metals can cause lung disease, together with an increased risk of asthma and cancer.

Having said that any welding produces toxic fumes to a point, just not sure if stainless is worse.

Yes any sort of welding produces "bad gasses"   but as these where done in the open air the effect would have been much reduced.

Stainless will be more expensive...but you wont have to paint it  and it should last longer  due to less corrosion  however there are different grades of stainless steel some do rust.

Is it really stainless, or just galvanized?

Yes hard to tell from the photo   I know welding galvanised steel gives off a horrible smelling and supposed to be "highly toxic" gas.

Looks like normal steel to me.

I'm not sure that you can weld stainless steel.

I would imagine that it's a plate coating, applied after it's formation,

But that's just an educated guess.

That the steel is probably zinc coated is correct.

That you can’t weld stainless steel is completely wrong, all forms of welding work.
