Ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!

Couldn't make it up but just shows the altered reality and priorities of 'government' leaders and their backers!!!

God only knows what it will  take to wake the populace and the old adage about getting the government and leaders you deserve spring's to mind. Hope somebody grows a pair for their futures sakes...

The soldiers and their "government" are probably doing what they were taught at their military academies, the old UK tv series "The Army Game" and "Bootsie and Snudge" spring to mind to those

who can remember it.

Navy defends Bt22.5bn deal for submarines as ‘good value’

The Royal Thai Navy has defended its Bt22.5-billion deal to purchase two more submarines following public complaints that the money should be spent on relieving people’s suffering amid the Covid-19 crisis.

Vice Admiral Talengsak Sirisawad, Naval Operations Department chief, today said the submarines were needed to protect Thai marine interests worth Bt24 trillion.

He added that the submarines would reinforce Thailand's bargaining power when negotiating with other countries to defend national interests.

Talengsak said the Navy considered the purchase carefully and found it was beneficial for the economy and for national security.

The Navy spoke up to defend the deal following a public outcry when government coalition MPs voted to purchase two more submarines as the economy sinks under the impact of Covid-19.

The subcommittee for procurement, ICT, state enterprises and revolving funds, which is vetting the budget bill for 2021, voted 5:4 on Friday to spend Bt22.5 billion on two more subs from China.

The vote was deadlocked after four coalition MPs from the Palang Pracharath, Democrat and Bhumjaithai parties approved the Navy budget for the China-made subs, while four opposition MPs voted against. The opposition lawmakers were from Move Forward, Pheu Thai and Seri Ruam Thai (Thai Liberal Party).

The chairman of the subcommittee, a member of the pro-military Palang Pracharath Party, then voted in support, resulting in approval of the Navy budget.

The planned purchase is part of a deal signed by the military-backed government of Prayut Chan-o-cha to buy three subs from China. The first submarine was purchased in 2017 and will be delivered in 2024.

Vice Admiral Tirakul Kanchana, the Navy’s Comptroller-General, said the purchase of all three submarines will cost Bt36 billion. For the first sub, Thailand is paying over Bt13 billion in instalments between 2017 and 2023.

Tirakul said the purchase of two additional subs is part of this same deal, not a new procurement. The Bt22.5 billion payment will be divided into seven annual instalments of Bt2 billion-Bt3 billion, using the Navy regular annual budget, not an extra budget, he said.

Navy Chief of Staff Adm Sittiporn Maskasem said any delay in purchasing the subs could affect the country's marine security and Thailand’s credibility in international trade.

Who do they think is going to invade the "LOS"? And how would not buying them  affect Thailand's credibility in International trade? Ah, sorry, loss of face - now I understand!

Thailand  cost  is not siutable  for  submarines  then will  just make fools of them selves  being close to  surface  or  on the  surface most on the time

Big  fast   coast  gaurds  boats  much better value  and  a fractionof the  cost

But the  kickbacks  comparred to the  subs  would be very lttle   so  not  of interest  to  navy top brass  bank accounts

Think  waht is best  for Thailand   hahahahahaha

They belong to China already. They sold the country to their big buddy Winnie Pooh Xi.

I think we have covered the many reasons this is a ridiculous purchase. Slightly off track my question is why is it taking 7 years to construct them?  The way they construct sky scrapers in China their done in no time at all.  Are the Chinese working on a more inferior quality of steel for the hull...not yet available?  Maybe the Thai's tasked with quality control are holding out for bigger brown envelops!

It just shows how staggeringly arrogant and detached from their populace these people have become.

There will be mass unemployment and maybe civil strife at the end of this year when the Covid 19-reset starts really kicking in, and these dummies are justifying purchasing Submarines that can't even operate correctly in Thai waters.. Words fail..

Takes years to build up a submarine force

1. First thing you need is a professional pool of military soldiers, sailors and technicians not to mention leadership with a high degree of education and ability, also required is appropriate infrastructure to deliver the training and development required to achieve the aim of a 21st century Submarine capability

2. Cannot......

Have they found out yet that subs go underwater?

You need expensive to maintain submarines like a hole in the head. Also all your waters around Thailand for defense are shallow.

maybe these are the first subs with stealth mode? does this works when you can see them with the naked eye?

Exactly what is the threat to Thailands national security that can be resolved with a Submarine??

Especially when considering the Gulf is too shallow (Av depth 58m).

Thailand is better off putting the Billions of Baht for the cost of a Submarine towards a social welfare system to avoid the country going down the drain when 20%+ unemployment is realised after they killed off the economy due to the Covid-19 hysteria.

No wonder there is demonstrations here

The the SAAB A26 line of submarines would be much more suitable and they could get 10 units of the A26 submarine for every Chinese sub they are buying but not as much pocket money.

What are you talking about? The SAAB A26 costs approximately $925m each, that's nearly three times the price of the Chinese <deleted>.

VAdm Thaloengsak Sirisawat, director-general of the Navy Operations Department, said the country needed enough resources to protect its sovereignty and maritime routes in the event of a maritime territorial dispute or clash in the South China Sea.

Well how convincing is that! The Chinese have already STOLEN the South China Sea, what you gonna do about it! ????

Offer their services to the Chinese just in case they may need some assistance? :whistling:

The independent nations of S.E. Asia that want to retain sovereignty of their seas and trading routes will need to get together in some form alliance to provide a reasonable threat and defence against the might and creeping Chinese control of the seas.

I don't know whether they are getting together in this manner or not - or talking about it yet.  But If they all just give up building their own defence capability as proposed by all the cynical and derisory   comments here, then they'll have nothing to contribute to such an alliance.

I think Thailand is to be commended in taking a stance and putting some of their money where their mouth is to develop capability.  It's also time for the wider and western free world to co-operate / assist independent SE Asian nations in developing that alliance and capability instead of e.g. piling arms into the middle east.

With that background, I find the (presumably mostly white farang?) derision, sarcasm and cynicism posted here repulsive: downright shameful and disrespectful.  - If you're happy to see China walk over the entire South East then I suggest you just shut up and watch it happen and remember your cynical / inactive contribution to that.  If, on the other hand, you want to see independent SE Asia nations continuing, then lobby your own governments to support development of capability and alliance.
