RTP announce new road traffic fines: Some are actually REDUCED

Despite the appalling carnage on Thailand's roads new fines announced by the Royal Thai Police show some have effectively been reduced.

 

Fines that could have been as much as 1,000 baht under previous laws can now be as low as 200 baht. 

 

And the fine for pillion passengers on motorcycles not wearing a helmet is TWICE as much as the fine for the driver.

 

In announcing some of the new measures that are at the discretion of the police, the Channel 7 presenter kept a straight face. 

 

The new fines are among 155 infractions contained in the Government Gazette and are effective immediately.

 

They include:

 

1. Not obeying signs or (red) lights

 

Previously: Not to exceed 1,000 baht. Now: 500 baht

 

2. Driving on the footpath

 

Previously: 400 to 1000 baht. Now: 500 baht

 

3. Speeding

 

Previously: 200 to 500 baht. Now 500 baht

 

4. No licence

 

Previously not having a licence was up to 1,000 baht.

 

Now not being able to show one is just 200 baht. 

 

(Thaivisa notes that the wording here has changed slightly)

 

5. Black smoke emissions

 

Previously up to 1,000 baht. Now 1,000 baht.

 

6. Not wearing a helmet

 

Driver not wearing one: Previously was up to 500 now 400 baht.

 

Pillion passenger not wearing one: Was 500 baht now 800 baht. 

 

In addition current tickets are being phased out at the end of October. 

 

The new ones can be paid "anywhere" reported Channel 7.

Nothing about driving without lights after dusk?

Should be mandatory to have lights on when it is raining too!

As the wording has changed, perhaps to avoid the reduced 200 Baht fine you're now allowed to show someone else's licence?

This just goes to show that the powers that be are not at all serious

about reducing accidents ,injuries' and deaths on Thai roads, maybe they

are trying to cull the population, as this does nothing to improve

the driving habits of those on the roads, the fines should have been raised

as hurting them in their pockets is a deterrent

Pillion not wearing a helmet is now an 800baht fine, rider not wearing one is half that?

 

 

Thailand’s approach to road safety is all about media announcements and enabling the current apathy of enforcement !

I think I can see the logic here.

 

Due to Covid-19 so many people have lost there job. So little money going around now.  It is nice to see that the police are supporting the people it is serving by making fines more reasonable and easier to pay.

 

If only the western government would learn from this .... but I fear not ... We westerners are so set in our own ways (feeling of great superiority maybe?). We can not see the light, even when it shining the brightest.   ????

Sarcasm or humor?Lots of ways to look at this.I have heard Thai people say they are going to get their DL because the fines were getting too high.If every one has a DL no more money from people who do not have a DL.Not good for the police.

Logic would be to increase fines in bad times to get the people to comply with the rules but logic is not

a very big part of Thailand.

In other countries fines are a big income for the government but i suspect here it is still supporting some

private funds.

It is not about traffic safety ,it is all about generating cash.

What REALLY  should be mandatory is 3rd  party  insurance for damage to other peoples property, its  all too easy to just walk away form an accident for most of them like the fugwit who hit me yesterday.

Then theres the amount of  bodily  harm insurance a paltry 80k payout, thansk I  lost both arms but that 80k  will come in really useful for mopping up the blood!

The word for logic in Thai is ตรรกวิทยา - tukka wittya. 

 

I have used it a few times but most people did not know the word.

Wonder if that refers also to the taxi motorbike that doesn't give you the spare helmet ! If so, I can see a cracking new opportunity for a taxi and police combo scam

Many wrong decisions in these new charges.  Yes and my friend who raised driving without lights at dusk and even later. Many vehicles are quite invisible on the road and as such become lethal weapons for pedestrians

and other road users.

Ridiculous...the fines should be at least ten times more (small ones are no deterrent) and if they cannot pay - confiscate their vehicles untill such time as they can.
