Hi Guys,

I've been looking online for a budget, second-hand MPV such as a Toyota Innova, Avanza, or Proton Exora. The price range for the older models has been between 100-200k Baht. Are these normal prices for such vehicles? Is it possible to get a decent second-hand MPV for less than 200k?

My co-worker says I can't get anything decent for less than 400k Baht which is way outside of my budget range. I just need a durable car that can house my dog's large travel crate when we go to train. I don't need a fancy or newer model vehicle.

You said the prices range from B100-200K, then ask if it's possible to get one for less than B200K.

Finding something decent will take time and effort. Avanza and Exora should be much less than an Innova. I think the Innova is on the Corolla platform and the Avanza is on the Vios platform.

Getting a pickup will be your best value.

Yes, I meant the price range on the websites I have found have been between 100-200k but I want to know if people think those are good prices for a good vehicle.

You are correct, the Exora is much cheaper but appears to be solid. I personally don't mind a pick-up but due to the weather in Thailand, my dog will overheat in the back of a pick-up on hot days.

Thanks, I didn't know there were platforms for selling cars here. I'll check them out ????

The problem with the price range you are looking at is the vehicles will all have high kilometres on them, and winding back odometers is a national sport. Also, it's difficult to know how well they have been maintained.

Probably an Avanza is your best bet, because the 1.5 litre motor is bulletproof, and almost every mechanic in Thailand knows the Toyota brand.

Not sure what kind dog you have, but my Akita loved riding in the back of the pickup. It is no hotter in the back of a pickup than it is outside, and if it's in the crate, it has shade as well.

In any event, you really have to go an look at a car to tell if it is a good value. If you see a month old ad and contact the buyer and it is sold, it was probably a good value. The Protons are cheap because people do not want them and service options are limited. If you live close to a service center that is still open, it might be a good value for you.

If you buy something that is common, price and availability for parts and services are competitive. If you buy something uncommon, while you may save up front, you may have to pay even more in the long run.

Buy and old Isuzu pickup

While I do not agree that most all Thais are cheaters, I do agree that the Avanza would be a great choice, and for the same reasons.

Thanks....I will look into the Avanza. I think it checks all boxes for me (Durability, space, and price). The pick-up will be my second choice. I do dogsport with my Belgian Malinois and we usually want the dogs to conserve as much energy as possible before training so having an air-conditioned vehicle will be a plus  ????

Yes I understand. Most of the cars I've seen online have about 200,000km on them (hopefully that's the actual value). As long as the car is in good condition, I am okay. It'll be used for mostly short distances when I'm looking for fields to train on.

See if you can find a Toyota Sport Rider....SUV body on a Tacoma frame/platform.....

Not the quickest or sexiest, but within your range & they last forever with regular maintenance....2WD & 4x4.....Some turbo'd, some not....

Chances are the non turbo would be the safer bet for longevity....

There is a Sport Rider group on FB which sometimes shows ones for sale...

FB marketplace also has vehicles within you budget....

Stay away from Kia, Proton, and that ilk....

While the Sport Rider is a good choice, did they not quit making them about 15 years ago? When was the last time you saw one?

We have one among our 3 vehicles....It's our daily errand rig.....Only thing it's ever needed was a T-belt & waterpump....

Yeah, it's old iron but I routinely see 3-6 a day buzzing around CM.....

That's why I cited the FB page....I think there's one there from a few days back....

Please mate, don't put your lovely dog in a Proton:

You will destroy his reputation. How can he communicate again with his friends if they see him, arriving in a Proton.

One thing for sure. You don't need to worry that someone steals your wife, seeing her cruising around in this vehicle.

And all the other dogs will be talking smack about how much fun they had riding in the back of the pick-up while he was inside his sissy crate in the Proton!

Innova or Avanza. Basic but solid and can be fixed anywhere. Engines can last forever. Just ignore whatever mileage is on the clock. Many Bangkok taxis rack up easily 150-200,000 km a year. Stay away from anything converted to LPG.

Buy from a car tent and it will be more expensive but that said, anyone looking to buy a car with 100% cash these days should be in a strong position.

I don't think I've ever said the majority of Thais are cheaters, all of the ones I know are honest. I'm just saying used vehicles are something of a minefield here, especially in the price range the OP wants. Can't say I've heard of any consumer protection laws either.

What's your basis for saying that as though it is something peculiar to Thailand and bad?    Written-off vehicles are frequently repaired in the west, insurers' writing-off of vehicles is a financial decision.

To buy an elder car is always a lottery. But as other also write here go for a brand with a good reputation also for old cars. In my opinion the two "strongest" brands for elder cars is Toyota and Isuzu. an outsider could be Mazda.

No doubt the strongest cars is the pick ups with diesel engines 2,5 to 3,0 litres, these have often also "closed" versions with 4 dors and 6-8 seats. These cars is not very comfortable but they are very strong and with a little luck they do not need many visits at the mechanic.

Here you can get a car from around 100.000 baht in ok condition.

I would look at Kaidee and buy it private, then you can get it cheaper.

Do a few simple diesel engine checks, not to much smoke and it must not be white, black smoke is often because the thais is giving them more diesel on the engine diesel pump, then they get a little more power and more polution. The engine must start very fast and best if you can try to start it from cold and check the smoke, a little black start smoke is normal for an used diesel engine, but it must go away when the engine is started up, then no smoke if you a re not pressing the engine. Look at the radiator top, does it looks at the water/radiator has beeing to hot, then there can be expensive repairments. Always take a drive in the car min 20-30 km, stress the engine and look for the temperature, it must not go high, go to the highway and let engine run for full speed min 10 km and check the engine temp constantley. This is som simple checks anybody can make, it can safe you from some problems, but there can still be a lot of other problems in an old car. In an old car, you do not have installments, but you will have to go to visit the mechanic some times, if you are are lucky you will safe a lot of money with a good old car.

Good luck

because close where I live, their is a garage and I see them working on their cars. Most of them would never be allowed back on the roads where I come from.
