BANGKOK (NNT) - A Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister says good governance must be upheld to prevent corruption, adding that civil servants are at the heart of the anti-corruption process.

Mr Anucha Nakasai, this week presided over the opening of an academic conference on good governance and corruption prevention in Thai society, organized by the Royal Society’s interdisciplinary committee for research and development.

In his remarks, Minister Anucha emphasized the role played by civil servants at all government agencies in the prevention of corruption, urging them to uphold good governance and to refrain from involving themselves in any corruption, even when an illicit offer is made.

He proposed an idea to give incentives to civil servants as a token of appreciation for their work, and to discourage them from participating in corruption.

The conference on this occasion was attended by government officials and delegates from private firms, all keen to find mutual and practical guidelines to end corruption. Suggestions and input at the conference will be gathered by the Royal Society, and ultimately submitted to the Cabinet.

They could do worse than start with those immigration officers accepting bribes to 'legally' overlook money in the bank requirements for extensions ????

Perhaps the minister is not familiar with the English word 'endemic'. Corruption is so much a part of the civil service that it takes payment of a bribe to even enter the profession, at least in cases where self-enrichment is possible.

Basically what he wants to say is that only those on the top of the hirarchy are "authorized" to take the big bribes, but the lower ranks of civil service have to strictly do as the boss tells them, and not to accept any bribes of others, in order to avoid any disturbance of this hierarchic rule.

This wonderful article discribes very well this very special Mafia-like Thai culture:

Laughable; it is in the realms of the Civil Service where the majority of corruption is centered and they are hardly likely to want to change anything !

They need to start from the top with the unelected PM who got appointed with the party who really did not win the election. Amazing how someone can increase wealth since 2014. Also amazing someone can have given himself immunity. Also amazing that someone could have over 25 very very expensive loaned watches from a dead friend. No one is buying this trivial poppycock.

It seems that the word "anti" was a typo added in by mistake.

Does anyone. and that includes the Thai so called politicians, actually either believe in this claptrap themselves or even think that anyone else does either

Sadly you are correct. I have been hearing the same mantra for 20 years, each year with the same message and what do you get. Same same.

You will not see real change until the root of corruption is seen in Thai society as evil and counterproductive. It is not or nowhere near.

Delete "anti" you might be onto something !

You allowed that repulsive toad off with huge corruption when he was caught bang to rights. Don’t talk to the Thai people about fighting corruption, you hypocritical deplorable.

As one friend said to me, “they have prosecuted some people for corruption. That’s better than nothing”. And as I told him, that’s called selective justice. And selective justice is no justice at all. A concept he, and so many others, can’t understand.

For many ex-pats, I hope not. That is how I continued living in Thailand for the past 6 years before moving to Cambodia, courtesy of a very "considerate" Immigration Office.

Wherever corruption, civil servants are at the origin. If you want to a HAVE kosher society, pay them decently, enforce anti-corruption laws, fire the sinners, make examples. In my civilized democratic western country, if you try to bribe one, the latter himself will report you to justice. Of course there always will be exceptions. But I am afraid that currently it is just wishfull thinking in this country, UTOPIA.

Try the  corrupt  land depts  too, they want a  cut  off any condo sales to make the process run smoothly, Hua  Hin and  Bkk near Seacon Square and probably many others too

When I stopped choking from the severe laughter episode that happened when I read the OP, I thought, "why not send that crack team that looked for prostitution in Pattaya to look for corruption?"

Yep. Ante-corruption might also work. Have to buy for your position before being able to start "earning". fore

As higher in the Sakdina pyramid corruption happens, as less it is corruption anymore, and as more it becomes highly ethical support of the "good people". And as higher the bribes, as more ethical and laudable it becomes. TIT.

Is corruption not the sole purpose that civil servants and politicians get involved and buy their way in, buy their promotions or through nepotism or connections knowing full well the investment will be returned, in govt and their agencies in the first place? Don the uniform and share in the spoils, Thailand would cease to operate without the trough! Good luck with that one, Kh Anucha, YOU ARE DREAMING!

Here the exception is one that doesn't.

Corruption is at every level in society, having to deal with a civil servant you can almost guarantee it.

This will legalise their corruption.

Disgusting people!

You can smell it also

It's just a way of life, having lived here for 25 years and I have bought and sold a few properties and been involved with business I could write some stories on here but Im not, I have always said if you want to try and cut out corruption then start at the airport.
