Local authorities in the Mae Sot district of Tak province on Sunday confiscated 70,000 units of illegal face masks from China aimed for Myanmar.

The district administration joined forces with soldiers at 10.30pm to raid a house in Mae Ku subdistrict after intelligence agencies reported about the suspected smuggling activity.

Authorities found 28 packs with 70,000 units of illegal face masks inside, but the smugglers were nowhere to be found. They confiscated the goods for further investigation as they are possibly not approved by the Customs.

They are suspected to have been intended for delivery in Myanmar where there has been a surge in demand for face masks due to the second wave of Covid-19.

The headline is rather misleading. It suggests that the masks WERE confiscated and THEN subsequently smuggled into Myanmar!   LOL

Well that is probably happening as we speak!

The authorities find themselves with a large number of masks on their hands.

Adjacent Myanmar has a huge demand for masks.

What is tbe definition of illegal face masks?

One that does not meet the Thai Standard equivalent of EN 14683:2019 for medical use or EN 143:2000 for PPE.

Ah, the English language used at its best.

The masks were not shipped to Myanmar. They were stopped in Thailand. I wonder what made them illegal, the fact they came across the border with no visa?I

They confiscated the goods for further investigation as they are possibly not approved by Customs....Approved in what way? The manufacture standard? Surely Customs are interested in money. Import duties etc. If it is suspected that these are being legally sent to Myanmar, Myanmar manufacture standards should apply. If suspected of being smuggled, I agree, confiscate and destroy them after properly ascertaining their status.

Nice to know the Army is being put to good use.

There may be many reasons why the masks may be illegal. Manufacture standard is only one.  If being shipped to Myanmar, Thai standard do not apply. Thailand may be just a staging post. The raid may become an issue if the masks are legit.

Why, in the name of all that is holy, does the man responsible for assessing "counterfeit" face masks need to wear a desert camouflage combat suit in a tropical (jungle and rainforest) environment? Dressing up gone mad!

They probably will still find their way into Myanmar.
