Koh Samui ready to offer a ‘bubble’ for foreign tourists

As many as 23 hotels in Koh Samui have been proposed as alternative local state quarantine (ALSQ) sites and most of them are expected to pass the grade, the tourism sector said.

Thai Hotels Association – Southern Chapter East Cost said of the 23 hotels and resorts proposed to the ALSQ committee, eight had been checked on September 23, while the remainder will be checked in October.

Ruengnam Chaikwang, the association’s president, said most of the proposed hotels had pool villas and were a fair distance from main streets and local communities. Hence, he said, it will be difficult for tourists to get away during their quarantine period.

Also, he said, tourists’ movements will be monitored by the more than 1,000 CCTV cameras installed around the island.

The Tourism Association of Koh Samui also said each of the proposed hotels had more than 70 rooms, and put together, they would have over 1,000 rooms. The association believes at least 90 per cent of the 23 hotels will pass the grade and some 200 tourists will visit Koh Samui initially.

Private representatives were expected to propose this Koh Samui bubble idea to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Wednesday.

Thailand needs courageous leadership. They don't have it. The army are major cowards. ANY person from ANY nation should be welcome starting tomorrow, if they are willing to subject themselves to a 14 day quarantine and pay excessive fees for that two week sentence. There is no downside or risk, and only upside for the nation. No begging from a local consulate should be required. That is utter nonsense. A covid free letter and a booking at an approved hotel. Nothing else. No insurance. No groveling.

Nice angle in the photo. When you actually walk on Chaweng that way, on your left side would be one concrete abomination after the other. That in a country where bamboo is everywhere. Fugly.

They have the wrong government who doesn't even get easy things done. I see a mass exodus regarding hotels, restaurants and a lot more.

They don't seem to understand that Thailand isn't the only holiday destination on this planet.

Who wants to spend his holidays on Alcatraz? Only in a banana-republic-style police state like Thailand the authorities can believe that tourists accept this.

Do they actually believe that Tourists are waiting in airport lounges around the world to go on holidays to Thailand! The arrogance is unreal! Nobody in the right mind would be travelling across the world right now...for a holiday. Or would they????

I was going to comment on the same. Absolutely ridiculous. Of course the statement is for local consumption only; but word will get out.

If tourists are allowed full use of the resort area (pool, beach) during quarantine this could work. If confined to their rooms, very few takers and those few won't be tourists but people who live here and have no other way to get back.

There are 'tourists' who live overseas who have property on the island. They usually come here for 3 to 6 months every year.

They will consider any offer that allows them to come to their second home. They will happily pay to stay in a resort for two weeks.

Same for Phuket.

Samui sounds a bit better than Phuket, though haven't been for about 16 years but I bet it hasn't changed a bit!

Definitely not enough to save the tourism industry. A drop in the ocean.

Vaccine please come and free us all before all of our rights and freedoms are gone forever by the so called "world leaders"!

The total idiocy of FEAR has made everyone MAD.

I know people that have gotten the virus, been "down" for a week and now still among the living doing just fine.

1000 Cameras/Wristbands/Charter Flights....complete overkill and nonsense.

Cheers

I think Koh Tao could also offer a good  bubble tourism package with free funeral expenses for anyone unlucky enough to meet a sticky end there.

2004 was about when it changed. After the tsunami it transformed from coconut island to concrete island. It happened overnight and ruined the whole atmosphere. The Phuket crowd invaded along with taxis and McDonald's. I stopped going there 10 years ago so won't be begging for one of those villas.
