September was world's hottest on record, EU climate change service says

LONDON (Reuters) - Last month was the world's hottest September on record, with unusually high temperatures recorded off Siberia, in the Middle East, and in parts of South America and Australia, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said on Wednesday.

 

Extending a long-term warming trend caused by emissions of heat-trapping gases, high temperatures this year have played a major role in disasters from fires in California and the Arctic to floods in Asia, scientists say.

 

"As we go into an even warmer world, certain extremes are likely to happen more often and be more intense," Copernicus senior scientist Freja Vamborg told Reuters, pointing to heat waves and periods of intense rain as examples of this.

 

Globally, September was 0.05 degrees Celsius warmer than the same month in 2019 and 0.08C warmer than in 2016, previously the warmest and second warmest Septembers on record, the Copernicus data showed.

 

Over the final three months of 2020, climate events such as the La Niña phenomenon and projected low levels of autumn Arctic sea ice will influence whether the year as a whole will become the warmest on record, the Copernicus service said.

 

The last five calendar years were the world's warmest on record. Average global temperatures have already climbed to roughly 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial times.

 

Countries agreed under the 2015 Paris climate accord to attempt to cap warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius, which scientists say would avoid the most catastrophic impacts of climate change.

 

But even though large emitters, including China and the European Union, have pledged to slash their emissions in the coming decades, overall, current policies would see temperatures rise far beyond the 1.5 degree level.

 

"That is the key point. The earth has warmed a lot, and it will carry on warming if greenhouse gas emissions continue at the rate they are at the moment," Vamborg said.

funny, whenever such a headline comes, I always had a few months of rainy and more cold than usual weather.

 

I remember on such occasion when my golf tournament in Switzerland was interrupted because of snow... the date: 1st May !!

Reuters post above could have given the direct links. While the article did point out that 2020 might supplant 2016 as the warmest year on record, this is remarkable and ominous since 2020 has NOT been an El Nino (warm cycle) year. 2016 was a major El Nino year.
To the story:

"Globally and in Europe, September 2020 was the warmest September on record, with the global average 0.05°C warmer than the previous warmest September in 2019."

"Globally, the twelve-month period from October 2019 to September 2020 was 0.65°C warmer than the 1981-2010 average. The value for this period is a little below that of the 12-month periods ending in May 2020 and September 2016, the two warmest periods in this record. 2016 is the warmest calendar year on record, with a global temperature 0.63°C above that for 1981-2010. 2019 is the second warmest calendar year in this data record, with a temperature 0.59°C above average."

The nonsense the many continue to post about climate always changing  - is nonsense because the RATE of change underway has exceeded the most extreme rates of change previously experienced globally. Even less rates of change did result in mass extinctions of up to 95% of all species.

 

For a species calling ourselves Homo Sapiens, we are not proving to be very sapient (wise.) Our species has only been around for about 235,000 years, far shorter than the millions of years dinosaurs managed. Most of our self destruction has been since industrialization began a few hundred years ago. Over half the problematic greenhouse gas emissions have been released in the last 30 years. That extra insulation has consequences, and we don't know how to reverse the damage. We are not even able to stop adding to the problem.

Hey, a good  news story that was not about covid 19, or China, or Trump. At least we can all say that we had a nice September.  Climate change did not start over night, and

will be with us forever, so will pollution, over population, etc.

How is messing up the climate = to a 'nice September' ? People fail to understand that even if you are selfish and want a warmer climate in northern latitudes, you can't just turn off the heating when you get to the temp that you think is 'nice'. Instead it will continue to heat up at a geometric rate. This is without taking into account all the other undesirable affects of climate change such a mass extinctions and food supply.

All these science guys talking about weather changing. Ahh, what do they know, these things change all the time. We could have an ice age tomorrow, didn't you know?

 

Oh, it was 130 degrees in September this year? Oh, that has only ever happened in July, twice is all. Ahh, it is just a coincidence.

 

What about dem runnin out of names for dem damn storms this year? There were five or somethin at one time. My goodness. Coincidence? Yeah, of course. Utter rubbish.. CO2 levels have risen by 25% in the last 50 years. Where did that come from?  Burning fuels of course.

 

There are 2 carbon cycles, the geological one and the biological one. The geological one emits CO2 via volcanoes - but human emissions are 10-100 times higher. The biological cycle recycles much more - about 1000 times more than the geological cycle, But this still means that humans emit 1-10% as much as the biological cycle - this is probably what Orton rd refers too with his 3% - But that is 3% extra every year. Like interest on savings it accumulates. Some is taken up by carbon sinks, but not all. So every year, the CO2 levels go up slowly, by about 0.5-1%.

 

And now, we start seeing the effects.

For Tyga,    I live in Canada where we get Winter with snow, ice, cold temperatures below 0c and 0f as well, so yes I do enjoy a nice September, as when it gets to October the nights cool down to freezing, and even snow can start to fall.  You can go on about climate change, but please do not deny me of a nice September.  Thanks.
