Daily News went to Krabi in southern Thailand to investigate after a fisherman called Prasert, 33, found a very strange fish while out collecting crabs 20 kms offshore at Bong Bong island.

Prasert said he brought it back to port because he had never seen anything like it. The elders in the fishing community agreed and no one knew what it was.

Daily News said the white spotted fish weighed 2.7 kilos, was 42 cms long and had a face like a human with eyes perched on top of its head. It had a particularly big and thick mouth but no teeth.

Prasert said he didn't dare eat it.

Andaman fish expert Dr Thatsaphaphon Krajangdara did manage to throw some light on the discovery saying that it was known as Pla Uk in Thai or Pla Upayak. There were different names in different regions but it was found in both the Gulf and the Andaman and was an important part of marine ecology.

It was rare but had recently been described in scientific literature.

Daily News quoted online information that suggested it was Ichthyscopus Pollicaris in Latin but had no common name in English yet.

Any scuba diver could have told them it's a "Stargazer." A benthic fish that lies on its stomach submerged in sandy areas with only its upward focused eyes visible. It's an ambush predator.

  • Hey, I recognize him!  He was a drunk who hung out on Soi Bukhow.  One day he went to the beach and never came back, no one knows where he went.

No, but close enough. Her name was Dory. Barb was her sister who worked two buildings down the soi. But Barb didn't look like a fish. More like a walrus. It WAS a strange family. Wait until I'll tell you about Dory's other siblings someday.

Yes I think I know the Plaice you are talking about

An old one who lost his dentures. Actually those aren't teeth...those frilly appendages around the mouth are skin growths mimicking worms and such to attract fish to its moutn

Isn't that dead fish evidence of harming marine wildlife, removing it from the natural environment and animal cruelty?
