Vehicles and houses engulfed in flames after gas tanker and truck/trailer collide

Daily News reported a serious situation developing around 12.40 am this morning in Buriram after a gas tanker collided with an 18 wheel truck/trailer.

 

Fuel from the tanker flowed down drainage channels and ignited. 

 

Many explosions were heard. 

 

Many vehicles and houses were on fire as the blaze spread.   

 

The incident happened near the Nong Kee Tat Nang Rong intersection.

They said that the fire was out of control and an exclusion zone of many kilometers had been created around the scene.

 

There were no reports of injuries or death as yet.

Bonfire night not till 5Th November ....I remember when that

truck carrying a big gas tank that was tied down with rope,

fell off in Bangkok the whole street was ablaze ,many cars

written off and many dead, hope that's not the case here

Let's see if there are any new excuses to add to the list that hitherto includes brake failure, bald tyres, slippery road, poor weather/visibility and so on. Meanwhile, no reports on injuries and death - hope it stays that way.

People fled for their lives as more than 10 residential buildings and 20 vehicles were engulfed in flames following a series of explosions when a gas truck crashed into an 18-wheeler in Nakhon Ratchasima early on Thursday, leading to an as-yet-unspecified number of injuries.

 

The gas truck lost control at 12.30am near an intersection in Nong Ki district and slid into the other truck. The crash generated a massive explosion to start with.

 

The gas then fuelled the spread of the fire around the area, which was shaken by further explosions, forcing everyone who lived nearby to run for their lives.

 

More than 50 fire trucks battled to extinguish the huge blaze before it expanded to other areas.

 

Rescuers had to rush the injured to hospital.

 

It took three hours to control the fire and a 5km-radius of the area around the explosions was closed.

 

The drivers of both the gas truck and the 18-wheeler miraculously survived after jumping out of their vehicles in the nick of time just before the explosion.

This reminds me of a 1971 truck accident in Hornsby NSW 

A fuel tanker rolled going around a bend

It ended up in a fire station

Needless to say that the fire engine was not used to quell the blaze

Is a bit confusing isn't it. I've just looked up Nong Ki district and it's the western most district of Buriram. So that looks a likely bet. We have relatives in  Nakhon Ratchasima, so we're keen to know the true location as well.

The fire was at the Nong Ki interchange  in Buriram District on the road from bangkok to surin. The town is just inside the border of Khorat and Buriram. My gf lives 1km away. Explosion occurred about 12 midnight. Very heavy rain all night. Petrol in drains and across road and frontage road also. No one killed. Many cars and tuk tuks died a horrible death... no one inside thank god. If it happened day time the cost of lives would have been huge as it is s busy  junction.

The Petchaburi disaster 30 years ago: 

- 20 year old unlicensed truck

- Illegally modified 

- Steel used in the construction of the gas tanks not thick enough

- No cables or bolts in place to secure the gas tanks (rope allegedly used)

- Autopsy of driver found Alcohol and Amphetamine

 

 

Can Thailand honestly say it learned anything from this and made and permanent changes or improvements ?

 

If we go back to news articles from 30 years ago I bet we will read ‘crack down on fuel trucks’ !!!

Yep - the humans that allow this sort of thing to happen, ie. The general population that votes for governments that don't prioritise road safely.

Buriram is a province. NongKi is the district.

 

The road in question is the 24. Korat to Ubon road.
