Seeing as it was started in 2017 and is pretty much finished the money was donated well before people were losing jobs and struggling. Another topic sure to get all the TVF grumps out, and it sure hasn't disappointed! 6 1
Katipo
Other than bringing back the adoring hoardes to a temple whose popularity has waned significantly in recent years, what good will this idol bring to the people of Thailand?

Made of copper and a tribute to Buddhism Despite looking as if it is completely crafted out of the gold, the Buddha statue is made of copper, and corresponds with the image the former abbot saw in his dream. how241
Looks OK to me. Just think what the Eiffel Tower did for Paris and that was never meant to be a permanent structure.
RobU
It is a modern landmark not necessarily a waste of money. It reflects the culture of Thailand and will be a major tourist attraction, with news and media throughout the world using it in photos as the iconic depiction of the Thai capital. Excellent publicity but it will take years to embed in world media.
Donga
Totally appropriate, in good taste and will add to the many tourist attractions. Just add tourists...

ross163103
Wasn't that temple organization Dhammakaya--and it's abbot, under investigation a few years back for land fraud? Or was that a different organization? if it is the same; guess the land fraud deal has been forgotten.....like a lot of things do in Thailand. I've learned brown envelopes have quite an effect on memory here.
