The chief of Region 5 police in northern Thailand has called for three women who entered the country illegally and spread Covid-19 to be made an example of.

Due to be released from a Chiang Mai hospital yesterday they will face three serious charges that could see them jailed for years.

The development comes as a meeting discussed the situation as five more illegal entrants tested positive for Covid-19 in Chiang Mai.

The new cases are a 29 year old woman, three other Thai women aged 23,25 and 26 and a Thai man aged 32.

Daily News reported they had been out and about at many places in Chiang Mai.

At Region 5 police HQ the commander Pol Lt-Gen Prachuap Wongsuk said that he had contacted Lanna Hospital to arrange for Covid-19 tests on 270 officers under his command as they have been involved in the latest arrests and represented a high risk of having contracted the virus.

The three women who started the whole outbreak that has put Thailand on tenterhooks were due to be released from Nakornping Hospital yesterday.

Lt-Gen Prachuap said that he had instructed Mae Sai police and immigration to summons them and make an example of them.

They will face three charges: a charge of not using an immigration checkpoint to cross has a fine of only 2,000 baht but in violating the emergency decree they will face two years jail and/or a 40,000 baht fine and they also face charges under Covid specific rules that could see them jailed for a further 1 year and/or fined 100,000 baht.

Daily News called the three women "chickens about to have their throats cut in front of monkeys" - a reference to a Thai saying about making an example of someone.

Not going to happen.

They will name a few of their "customers" and quickly this issue will disappear.

Remember that if there is one thing Thai people are extremely paranoid about it is Covid-19.

I think if the police do chose to sweep these cases under the proverbial carpet then there will be a massive public outcry.

Provincial Police Region 5 chief Pol Lt-General Prachuap Wongsuk instructed Chiang Rai Immigration Police chief Nattawut Saengduen on Wednesday to charge three people who illegally entered Thailand with Covid-19. The three have since recovered but are required to continue to observe their symptoms at home for another 14 days.

Mae Sai Police will now issue summons to the accused to acknowledge three allegations:

1. Not entering the kingdom through an Immigration checkpoint (fine not exceeding Bt2,000).

2. Violating the Emergency Decree (imprisonment not exceeding 2 years or a fine not exceeding Bt40,000, or both)

3. Failing to comply with the orders of the communicable disease control officer or the provincial governor according to the Communicable Disease Act (imprisonment not exceeding 1 year or a fine of not more than Bt100,000, or both).

Meanwhile, the Medical and Public Health Emergency Response Centre in Chiang Rai said there were 55 Covid-19 cases from November 28 to December 15 – one domestic case and six illegal crossers, who are women working at the 1G1 entertainment venue in Myanmar.

Nattawut said four others who illegally entered Thailand are residents of other provinces and they would also face the same charges once they recover.

Myanmar authorities say there are still Thais in that country. More than 20 in Tachileik have reported their intention to return to Thailand, which is in the process of reviewing their documents.

Why?

They just applied the behavior examples they have absorbed over the years from authorities and institutions. In other words they have acted as unprincipled, selfish and ignorant as many Thai authority figures did and still do.

I'm calling BS on this guy. Just apply the law will you......the same to them as for Mr Red Bull.

These women arent, to my knowledge, from a multi-millionaire family. They are working girls.

They wont be fleeing overseas, will they?

Shooting fish in a barrel. I dont see where Red Bull comes into it.

And then what? There has been a bit of unrest in Bangkok recently, a massive public outcry, that has achieved precisely nothing. No public outcry, to my knowledge, has achieved anything at all. And then next week it's all forgotten.

But surely he's a top cop ? Isn't he the one who dishes out the orders ??

Don't call for your minions to make an example of them, order them to do it, sheesh how freakin difficult is it !!!!

Good, pick-them up from the hospital and take them straight to a court room for harsh sentencing, this madness of coming back illegally and then going around town has to be stopped.
