Masks Block 99.9% of Large COVID-linked Droplets Says Study

Featured Replies

Face masks reduce the risk of spreading large COVID-linked droplets when speaking or coughing by up to 99.9 percent, according to a lab experiment with mechanical mannequins and human subjects

A good summary of the benefits of mask wearing...protect others by masking and in turn be protect by others wearing them. The mask are only marginal protection from inhaling virus laden droplets/aerosols already in the air but wearing one prevents up to 99% of infected person's droplets/aerosols from getting airborne in the first place.

The Czech experience (a strict mask mandate beginning March, cases, deaths etc very low through summer, dropping the mandate, followed by  a sharp pickup in cases) pretty much confirms they work in practice too, despite the odd(ball) paper to the contrary.

Given the cases over the last few days, I think they might be wise to bring back mandatory mask-wearing in Thailand about now, at least for a couple of weeks. (It'll also protect people from the pollution!)

We can post all the evidence there is, but to the anti-maskers, nothing will to through that thick layer of brick around their brains.

But sometimes, just sometimes... someone can make them rethink... or maybe not.

Agree completely, by protecting others you ultimately protect yourself.

The main argument against wearing a mask comes from the recipients not the senders view, e.g. masks stop nothing getting in, but masks do stop things getting out.

I think clear evidence from respected sources can make a difference. This again proves what seemed empirically true from the relatively low virus in Asia, where mask wearing has long been prevalent, that they do effectively reduce the spread of respiratory diseases.

Here's a test...

Hack up a big green loogie and spit.   Now, try that with a mask.

Can ya see the difference?

Those are mere chinwarmers. Expecting to see furry winter versions on the catwalks.

From my observations, I'd estimate the number at < 5%.

Yes, you drop your mask and gob it out somewhere safe and away from others, then lift your mask again after those few seconds.

What's the problem?  Had you not thought of that?
