Chonburi Governor: No lockdown in Chonburi

BANGKOK (NNT) - In Chonburi, the number of people infected with COVID-19 has decreased to just 16 from 108. The overall situation is getting better. Therefore, the Chonburi Provincial Communicable Disease Control Committee will consider allowing people to eat at shopping malls and restaurants but it is necessary to strictly comply with public health measures.

Chonburi Governor Phakthorn Thianchai led a team to inspect the marine safety service point during the New Year festival at Bali Hai Pier, Pattaya, Chonburi, to provide moral support to officials and to assess the strictness of the COVID-19 prevention measures due to a high number of cases in the area.

The Governor of Chonburi Province said today the number of COVID-19 cases in Chonburi has significantly decreased. He said he will consider easing the measures already in place in order to minimize the impact on people. For example, shopping malls and restaurants must require customers to keep a distance from one another. However, to cancel a measure, it is necessary to make sure that the outbreak doesn’t then escalate. Another discussion on the matter will be held among members of the Chonburi Provincial Disease Control Committee.

He confirmed that there is no lockdown in Chonburi. People can still leave and visit the province without the need to self quarantine at home, as all tourists have to comply with the measures of the Centre of COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Meanwhile, Mr Sonthaya Khunpluem, the Pattaya Mayor, said Chonburi has not introduced a lockdown so anyone can visit the province. There have been about 20-30 percent of normal tourist numbers in Pattaya during the New Year holiday, but the tourism pattern must be controlled in accordance with the government’s measures to ensure safety. Everyone must act to take care of the health of the entire community. Chonburi however, will soon consider modifying some of its measures.

I don't believe that number, as a guess it's 5% max

I agree with your 5% estimate. On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day the beach road and beach were deserted. All bars and most restaurants were closed. Total darkness on some, usually busy, sois and streets.

How can the numbers drop so quickly from 108 to 16? Some kind of miracle cure? Inaccurate testing?

I guess that they do not need to study a lot to become governor, right ?

is it something that you get from your ancestors ?

How much does one study to become a PM? The one we have now who bullied his way into office was educated at a Military Academy.

So that would suggest that one does not need to have studied much for anything except subjects to do with the Military. So what does that have to do with running a country?

So one would have to say that one does not need to study a lot to become a governor. If one wants to become a governor, all that needs to be done is get a bunch of tinpot soldiers behind him. A nice thick brown envelope to a certain party should suffice.

Its the oldest and most well established story in Thailand. Its not what you know its WHO you know, thats how the majority of jobs are given here, its family and friends first. The whole country is run like that. Education and knowledge is way down the list. (IMHO)

Nonsense, there were 745 covid cases reported today. The entire country is looking at a total lockdown some time in the coming fortnight, with curfews, and no alcohol sales, everything shut except essential businesses. They'll have no choice. It'll be total lockdown or just let the virus rip through.

Indeed, probably happening for end of January or early Feb, not looking good

they could stop testing and pretend it's not there, that seemed to work before ????

no.  Beach road restaurants and the Soi's were very open and serving alcohol and having DJ's.  Closed at 10, yes.  but opne all day both days.  Only the day of the "shutdown declaration" did they all close early.

Yes, some beach road restaurants were open (Hooters and Hops the biggest I saw throughout). Very few other restaurants were open on Soi Buakhao or on 2nd or 3rd roads. No beer bars were open from 31st December onwards - only those places serving food (iRovers, Retox, Beer Hub, Kilkenny, Golf Club and just a few others with food licences). Walking street was totally dark except for one or two restaurants. Soi 6 totally shut down - only a Pizza takeway open. Soi 7 and 8 closed too. Soi Diana, Chayaphum, Excite and Honey were all mostly shut except for a few restauarants and some errant massage girls trying to tear of the arms of any male walking past ????  No fun city for sure!

Let's just hope that they don't overreact like that!

If what TSF says is true, and there were 745 cases reported, I don't have confident in Thailand's contact tracers to get ahead of the curve.

Hard lock down, for at least two incubation cycles (1 month) is inevitable.

Good job the World has a good role model in the USA then, where the President wouldn't dream of giving all manner of jobs to wholly unqualified family, friends, acquaintances and anyone else who has feathered his nest.

I see this as an improvement in communication between the two levels of government here, which is great, considering the world is in a pandemic.

Normally, it would be:

"PM says more restrictions but up to Governors"

"Governor of Chonburi says more restrictions but up to PM"

                                           ????

Or the UK, where you spend £12 Billion on a failed test, track and trace system being run by a company headed up by the wife of a member of the cabinet, who by very good fortune has the responsibility for investigating corruption. You couldn't make it up.

My Mrs found something on the internet earlier ( in Thai of course so I can't comment yet) but from what she said it would appear that an alcohol ban is on it's way, I'll get her to pop out and top us up in the morning ???? Can't find any updates here, maybe in the morning.

UK's test, track and trace system doesn't seem to work. In Germany and South Korea they had succesful models prior to the UK starting theirs. They could have followed their lead.
