DPM Prawit ridiculed on social media as gambling dens/Covid spread fallout spirals

Social media has launched scathing and mocking attacks against deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwon who has been forced to backtrack on claims there were no gambling dens in Bangkok.

 

The DPM - previously at the center of claims that he had luxury watches that he denied - has now been shown as someone who has been at the very least, economical with the truth. 

 

Now it is the Thai police - and their allegedly corrupt officers from the bottom up - who are showing up his comments as utterly absurd.

 

Prawit was in charge of the police until this became the domain of the Prime Minister in his role as head of the ministry of the interior.

 

In dramatic moves great swathes of senior officers in Region 2, Rayong, Chonburi, Bang Lamung as well as Bangkok are now under investigation for dereliction of duty in allowing gambling dns to operate and permit the spread of Covid-19, Daily News reported. 

 

Indeed it is the resurgence of the pandemic in Thailand that is driving attacks on gambling dens, gamblers and people like the DPM.

 

 

A Facebook post went viral - creating more mockery of the ruling elite and police - after a gambling table was pictured fallen in the road in Lat Krabang. Someone was clearly in a hurry to get rid of the evidence in the area around Bangkok, claimed netizens having a field day sharing the story online.

 

Gambling dens have operated for decades in Thailand with only periodic crackdowns and superficial transfers interfering with their operation. The Thai public have been shown in polls and anecdotally to be completely aware of their existence and even specific locations.

 

But while many who like a flutter have been prepared to turn a blind eye to their operation - and the police involvement in the taking of bribes to allow them to operate - the Covid-19 resurgence has changed all that.

 

Now, RTP chief Suwat Chaengyodsuk is going after police in the provinces, some with the rank of major general who are provincial commanders and regional leaders. Bang Lamung police - where Pattaya resides - are also in the crosshairs.

 

Daily News - using the nickname of the new chief of the Thai police said that "Big Pat was serious".

 

Thailand's print media quoted a shamefaced Prawit as saying: "I didn't mean that gambling dens do not exist. We all know there are gambling dens....". He said it was up to the police to eradicate them. 

 

This came after his bald faced assertions that gambling dens did not exist in Bangkok. 

 

Suwat has set up a committee being presided over by senior police to investigate all the wrong doing. 

 

Covid may finally make a dent in the illegal gambling operations and the role of the Thai police in profiting from that.

 

The Thai people have found a cause - fear of the pandemic - that far outweighs their love of gambling, especially at this time of heightened concern of the spread of the virus by those gathering in packed places.

Expect a few arrests under the Computer Crimes Act very soon. Followed by apologies from those netizens who made misleading allegations against the DPM.

DPM Prawit and ridicule in the same sentence .. that surely cannot be right .. must be a mistake for miniscule I should imagine ..

That is a real knee-slapper there, my morning coffee almost was spewed forth when I read that tidbit.  To say the least the man could not tell the truth even if it was staring him in the face.

Gambling is a lot more prevalent in Thailand than in any other country I've lived. Thailand also happens to be the only one out of those countries where gambling is completely illegal. A coincidence?

The flabbergasting conundrum is, of course, that some of the individuals who *made* gambling illegal in the first place and/or who are supposed to police that the law is upheld are the very ones who are either directly involved in operating illegal dens or are benefitting from their operation in some other way. And *that* is the hypocrisy that unfortunately is so prevalent in our political, military and police circles.
