PHUKET: People arriving in Phuket placed under a mandatory 14-day quarantine are allowed to roam the hotel where they are staying, and are not confined to their room, the Phuket health chief has confirmed.

However, there will be harsh penalties for any people under quarantine found outside their hotel area, Dr Thanit Sermkaew, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO), told The Phuket News today (Jan 13).

Under the provincial order issued by Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew last Saturday (Jan 9), all people arriving in Phuket from the ‘highest-risk’ provinces must quarantine for 14 days at an Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) hotel or other appropriate venue after arriving in Phuket.

Talk about mixed messages.

(from the link above)  The same guy  [Dr Thanit] said:
"Please do not go outside the hotel. That would be a good preventative measure in Phuket province," he added.

What a pathetic statement. "Harsh penalties", followed by "please".

No physical enforcement means people will do what they like.

They really are desperate to fill up those hotels... some of this "highest-risk" provinces have cases in the single digits. But hey, its Phuket after all.

OMG

and not all these people arrive and leave at the same time

How idiotic is that

No wonder the highest infection rates detected were from people in quarantine - at least until a few weeks ago

they don't care if it spreads inside the hotels the more that get infected in there the more money they make when they are quarantined to a hospital where the bills are massive

He obviously doesn't grasp what "cross contamination" means...

I'm sure  he does. It means a person getting angry with the first one who passed on covid to them.

I think that may backfire as local tourists and staycationers (myself included) will avoid these ASQ hotels like the plague.

Well of course! That is exactly what quarantine with 2 tests is meant to do!

'allowed to roam (ASQ) hotel where they are staying'

Not as liberal as those staying at ASQ golf resorts where it seems the only restriction is not leaving the property.
