Thailand Bets on Chinese Shots to Start Rollout By Month End

Thailand will rely on Covid-19 vaccines from China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd. to kick off an inoculation drive that aims to cover about two-thirds of the nation’s eligible population by the end of this year, potentially paving the way for a full reopening of its tourism industry.

The Thai drug regulator is expected to approve Sinovac’s shots for emergency use parallel to the arrival of the first shipment of 200,000 doses later this month, Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Monday. But the bulk of the nation’s vaccine needs will be met from AstraZeneca Plc’s shots to be locally produced by a Thai drugmaker, he said.

Thai authorities were earlier betting on the delivery of 50,000 AstraZeneca vaccine shots to begin inoculation of its frontline health workers from Feb. 14, but the British-Swedish firm’s dispute with the European Union has delayed supplies to the Southeast Asian nation. The Bank of Thailand has said the pace of economic recovery this year hinges on the success of a vaccine rollout and the return of foreign tourists, and Anutin said economic growth will rebound once the healthcare concerns are addressed.

Alas all these patients were beyond help and are now DOA ????

Politically, by the summer the Thai government need to vaccinate a sufficient number of the "most vulnerable", however they choose to define that, that most Thais will then accept them swapping the quarantine and testing requirements for a vaccination passport requirement.

The actual efficiency of the vaccine matters less then the number of people they can vaccinate. Their main tourism target market, China, will have no problem believing that Sinovac has rendered Thailand safe.

But those 2mln Sinovac is only for 1mln people, less, what is needed for health workers in state and private system.
From june, or later, only up to 5mln doses will be available monthly. So it will take over a year to vaccinate half of population.
they seem to forgot, that both those vax require 2 shots.
by the time the majority is vaccinated, there might be a need for a booster with diffferent strains

Will believe this when I see Prawit getting the Sinovac vaccination.

I'm sure all the leaders will publicly take this shot on camera.

Just kidding.

'take this shot on camera'

Remembering Prawit and his 'medical emergency a year or so back, makes me think it should be 'shot' with an 'i'

Now you are betting on a Chinese vaccine and a local company with no vaccine experience to be fully ramped up in June.

''AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine is a modified adenoviral vector grown in mammalian cells. Siam Bioscience has solid experience with manufacturing and exporting products that use such mammalian cell technology. Our facilities comply with multiple international standards. They provide an integrated solution for every step of the process''.

I think we can trust them and I doubt that AstraZeneca would allow them to go ahead without doing a thorough due diligence.

This is too funny.

COVAX is looking like a good idea about now.

Those "direct" relationships to procure vaccines and negotiate volumes and prices hasn't worked out very well.

Fail.

Today, in a newspaper out of Bangkok, Anutin is feverishly denying that Thailand is late rolling out vaccines.

Anutin has been firing shots at all and sundry to try and justify why the Vaccines, and the Vaccine plan are all F22ked Up, and way behind most other Nations on the Planet.

He should know more than most why its all pear shaped, as he would be the person that is ultimately responsible, as Health Minister for the Vaccine procurements and their roll out plans for the inoculations.

If there ever was a Man who is so obviously out of his depth within a Position of Authority, its this Guy.

He needs to resign, or be replaced.

For the Health of the Nation.

Trust them? Due diligence of a Crown Bureau business?

They have zero vaccine manufacturing experience. If they did, they'd be manufacturing now. They also have 581million of accumulated losses...

I highly doubt they are the best option.

Fail.

I certainly don't know much about producing vaccines and I doubt whether you do either. But I'm very confident that AstraZeneca do know enough about the process and have chosen a company that can follow instructions correctly, which is, after all, what's required of them.

'The proof of the pudding is in the eating' as the saying goes. A quote from CNA reads:

''Siam Bioscience underwent a five-day virtual audit in December and all the batches it produces will also undergo quality testing, AstraZeneca said in a statement''.

I'm happy enough with that.

Thailand on track to distribute locally made COVID-19 vaccines in June

Thailands C.P. group will be pleased, they invested 515 million dollars in Sinovac

CP Group, through its subsidiary in Hongkong and operated by CP Pharmaceutical Group, has investe 515 million US dollars (approx. 15,450 million baht) to acquire 15% stake of Sinovac Life Sciences, which is a Chinese vaccine developer responsible for the development of CoronaVac under Sinovac Biotech.

Yes, its always about follow the money. If CP wants this vaccine then Thailand will have it, seems too many countries these days act on behalf of corporate wishes, read profits, regardless whether good for the country or not.

Ironic how those dystopian sci fi stories of corporate governance are coming true. Seem to recall it generally ended up with a small elite living in luxury as the majority gets half starved. The fools attacking and cancelling each other online haven't woken up that they are just useful idiots who will also be trodden on later. The poor think there is left and right, the truly wealthy know its really about rich and poor.
