What's with the sudden fascination over Chinese New Year?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Never seen it before.

everyone seems to be dressed in red chinese style outfits.

The girls look cute dont get me wrong, but it's new to me.

Is this a state sponsored push of chinese nationalism due to the covid pandemic?

are they forcing thais to be more china centric this year?

even in my local 7/11 they are all kitted out in chinese uniforms.

tbh, china can do one after what they have bestowed upon the world.

That's my thoughts on the matter anyway.

Course it might just be a coincidence that its chinese new year ?

  • Considering the Chinese population and heritage within the Thai population its hardly surprising and in my area its pretty much the same every year.

  • errr, correct me if i'm wrong but this is THAILAND. Last time I checked I wasn't living in CHINA.   Why on earth is chinese new year now a public holiday in Thailand? what the hell

the birds look cute af to be fair.

especially the swensens girls yesterday.

but my natural curiosity cannot help but wonder just what is actually behind it all?

Are they being forced to big up china by the powers that be?

Most probably a marketing gimmick to lure Chinese Thais.

Exactly that and nothing new or more than other years.

At MAKRO they sell expensive fruits/food directed to the Thai Chinese community.

Recently they played "Jingle Bells" in Chinese :cheesy:

Isn't Chinese New Year a national holiday in Thailand this year, for the first time?

Remember that 2021 is the Chinese year of the ox....or to put it another way, the year of the bullocks....

I asked my Thai gf. They also (kind of) celebrate Chinese New Year in her village up country. It's tradition.

It's a government holiday - slightly different from a national holiday, apparently.

Perhaps this link will be allowed:-

https://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/2020/12/29/chinese-new-year-is-among-new-govt-holidays-for-2021/

It seems logical, though. After all, most of the government seems to be of Chinese ancestry and seem very keen on Thailand becoming 'Little China'.

They do it the same ever year down here, hasn't changed in the 27 years of my experience.

That's Thais for you. Any excuse for a party. We even have a Christmas party in our village, especially now that they have a falang to 'justify' it for them.

Not for me.

That plane ticket back to the west is looking more appetizing by the day!

Let's see how bad it gets, once I reach my threshold i'm outta here.

Are you referring to the Thai celebrators or the posters on this thread?

Err the Chinese community in Canada is not in China. The Chinese Community in the US is not in China. The Chinese community in Australia is not in China. The Chinese community in Malaysia is not in China. The Chinese community in Singapore is NOT in China. those countries and many othrs embrace the culture and encourage it,

Apart from your seemingly bigoted view why should the Chinese Community (and those of Chinese descent- also known as the Merchant Class) in Thailand not celebrate?

I guess Christmas, Orthodox Christmas, Hannukah, Valentines Day, Easter, Thanksgiving  (both the real and US ones), Halloween and  and other cultural days should be off the list for those that want to recognise them in Thailand in your world.

It may also have escaped your notice that the Gov't is encouraging one long weekend every month to enhance domestic tourism. It just works out that this month its Chinese New Year. Gung He Fat Choi.

Back to the west? You may want to check this list before you go.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_Chinese

We wouldn't want you to be traumatised by the sound of firecrackers in wherever it is you hail from.

Have another wine WineOh, not everything you read is a conspiracy. It is now a government holiday and after all the suffering and huge numbers of the population being gutted by Covid, let them have their fun, you miserable sod.

Which China caused, btw.

I'll enjoy a drink on the Chinese New Year...thats about it...Personally, I'd never be into vacationing there let alone working...

When there is a putsch in Asia, it is the Communists who take power, so after Prawit's declarations that China is our family and the new dictator of Miramar who asks the Thai government for assistance how to make a putsch has a democracy e always remained in power, it seems logical to me that the words communist are applied much more every day to Thailand and China and become the dominant country in Asia, the strong repression of the last years of the dominant Buddhists and which had more power over the populations and although this process which is underway, the celebrations of the Chinese New Year is nothing other than the ongoing process, to remember many festive and religious celebrations with the guise of Covid are also disappeared or canceled. The shopkeepers must follow these new unwritten but well-written rules to survive

Welcome to the new Thailand, any more LOS,

Have you noticed how many people no longer smile ?

Agreed but you still can't take the Chinese out of the Thai Chinese and you are never gonna stop Chinese New Year being celebrated here, no matter how much winging you do.

The government is trying anything to get people out spending money ,trying to do something to push the economy up a few points.

So they made it a holiday, for the Chines their  New Year lasts 3 days ,tomorrow is the last day ,when every one goes out for the day and spend lots of money.

Have a close look and you will see that most of the shop keepers and / or big business owners are Chinese. Yet another conspiracy tragic,

When I first came here in the late 1970s they had Chinese Opera on a stage in the Kad Luang main market of Chiang Mai every Chinese New Year.
