CHIANG MAI (NNT) - The Royal Thai Volunteers Headquarters in Chiang Mai province has been following up on a project to expand forests to help in prevention of forest fires and to address pollution in the north.

Deputy Director of the Royal Thai Volunteers Headquarters, Gen Siwa Pramoratat, explained that forestation and land management is to take place in level 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 river basins, with designs based on input from communities. The work is to prepare the areas for forestation and farming between 2022 and 2027.

Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants, Thanya Netithammakul, explained that successful forest fire suppression is tied to water sources, which is why related tools were upgraded this year and water management was implemented to ensure adequate supplies to fight fires. Ground brush, that can fuel forest fires, is being converted into fertilizer. Royal mobile kitchens were dispatched to encourage people to take part.

During a follow up tour by officials, a demonstration of fire truck usage, engine-less leaf pressing and a royal firefighting turbine were shown. Officials also saw how royal volunteers make compost for fertilizer and inspected a royal mobile kitchen.

Do they have a variety of fire retardant trees?

The only thing that's going to help the horrendous pollution levels is to stop burning everything in sight. The current levels are half of what they were before they took a brief break from the field burning to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The burners will be back at it this evening however so enjoy the moderate air pollution levels while you can.

More forest land to be encroached upon.

This, surely, is an oxymoron. The more forest, the more fire...removing detritus is good forest management, as is controlled burnings, apparently. Controlled burnings is forest fire, no?

How does this idea lend itself into addressing pollution?

You stop having forest fires by not having forests.

They would be better occupied putting out the field burning fires.
