Amazing Thailand: Village authority spends thousands on basketball court in the middle of a paddy field

Villagers in the north east of Thailand are furious that their local authority has wasted money by building a basketball court in the middle of a paddy field.

 

It is FOUR kilometers from the village of Nong Phai Lom in Surin in the middle of nowhere behind another plot encircled by barbed wire. 

 

A track from the main road that is mean to be part of the project doesn't even reach.

 

A sign hails the development as a "Sports Area" for the people built in 2019.

The court is unused with gaping holes in the surface, buffalo and bird pooh everywhere, some old stone tables and a couple of netball posts discarded on the side. 

 

There is evidence of subsidence.

 

Reporters from Komchadluek responding to complaints received last week interviewed a local official who had a half smile. 

 

He insisted that the project to provide sports facilities for the people was continuing. 

 

They had invested 367,000 baht of municipal money so far and they would be spending 400,000 baht on a football pitch when the next budgets were announced. 

 

He claimed that the locals were kept fully informed of developments.

Question is who owns the land, or who was the contractor doing the work related to?

Stinks of corruption, built in the middle of nowhere, rainy season impossible to get there.

Looks well used and popular,great value for taxpayers money...????

Now you are mean Crossy! They must at least buy two goals. ???? I think 10k is a more realistic figure.

Nothing surprising here. Won't go into all the details there have been any number of similar projects under the SML (Small Medium Large village size) inititive.

 

Villages are given a govt. grant for infrastructure improvements depending on population. Usually there is a committee of elders who decide how the monies are spent (Not the Puyai Baan). TW has held the ATM card for this grant for the past 12 years (250K Baht x 2 a year).

Gets spent on roads, drainage, school, clinic etc. and gets heavily audited = if the funds are not spent productivity will be with held in the next period.

This is one of the main issues in Thailand.

A Village Authority decided to Plan and Construct this.

People with so called Intelligence, who are in a position to better there Communities.

Thailand will always be a Banana Republic as long as this kind of Folly is on display.

Somebodies kids nagged them into it, same happened in our village, weeds coming through it already.

????I love basketball!  no players the farmer should use it to dry their rice instead of laying it on the road and closing a lane?

This will be cancelled and the 400,000 baht will be spent repairing the basketball court. 

Maybe a helicopter field in the middle of nowhere would have been a better investment.

Village boss is friend with LeBrown James and will invite him soon for the opening gala. In 2058, the first Thai Baskett ball super star will emerge.

 

Great spot for a pick up of H.O.R.S.E..or D.O.G..  ???? He got game!!!  Must be the shoes!

Yep!  And after meticulous planning, one toothless old man will be sent there with a can of tar and a brush to fill-in the cracks.  400,000 baht well spent!

We have the same in our village. The boss of the village was given money by central government to encourage keeping fit. He asked the village what to spend the money on, it was decided to build a basket ball court as it could be used to dry rice on.
