Hotel reveals desperate state of tourism industry in Prachuap Khiri Khan

The Prachuap Post reported that tourism in Prachuap Khiri Khan was still poor despite government stimulus programs like "Let's Travel Together", "Let's Go Halves" and ""We'll Win".

They quoted the general manager of the downtown four star Prachuap Hotel, that has 137 rooms, as saying that things were no better since January.

Tourism was 70% down on last year and many businesses were still temporarily shut after laying off staff.

Pheerawut Rakkarncharoen said that the only hope for his business at the moment was to organize meetings for local civil servants.

But even this was limited - prior to Covid they could accommodate 500 participants but protocols such as social distancing meant now they could only cater for 300 people at a time.

Not surprising that bookings are down. I just tried to book a room for 2 nights in March on their website. No rooms available !!!  Either their website is stuffed or they are very busy.  I'm guessing it's their website.                They are eager to complain yet can't get the fundamentals right  !

A meeting ? To what end ? Organise a kidnapping of the PM to open the airports ?

It is a very nice place. My wife and I had lunch there twice in November. On one occasion there were four other people in the restaurant, and the second time we had the place to ourselves. That second time, we had to wait while they went to find the chef who possibly wasn't expecting any guests,

Not according to TAT , must have made a mistake, the rooms are full ????

Get used to it. You're involved in a very cyclical and competitive industry - at the best of times. Thailand was on the way down rapidly prior to Covid which has only accelerated the decline. Stop crying, find solutions, repair your reservations website (apparently it is not fully operational), streamline your business, and if all of that is just too much for you, get out of the industry. In the interim, do the Thai thing and dlouble your room rates.

According to the missus, the four people we saw on our first visit were civil servants who were probably eating at the taxpayers' expense. There was no sign of a guest on either occasion and the car park was at least 90% empty.

I was not impressed by the quality of hotels in PKK. The city has some lovely assets, but they are their own worst enemy.  Getting there isn't easy so you are forced to drive. If there was any understanding of tourism they would have made a better train schedule to facilitate travel from Bangkok.  IMO PKK is more relaxing than Cha Am or Hua Hin and I really like some of the seafood restaurants. Best of all it still is very Thai.
