Shot noodle vendor’s condition improves, bullet hit spine

PHUKET: The noodle vendor shot on Bangla Rd by a drunken off-duty police officer on Tuesday has showed signs of recovery, but remains under close care in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Vachira Phuket Hospital.

 

Aroon Thongplab was shot in the stomach by Cpl Pornthep Channarong of the Phuket Provincial Police just before 6am on Tuesday while he was walking along the street after collecting a noodle bowl from a customer.

 

“My husband is now conscious and he has already opened his eyes. He can respond to the doctor, but is unable to speak. He can feel a touch on his arms, but has no feeling in his hands,” Mr Aroon’s wife, Kulthida Chananan, told reporters at the hospital yesterday (Feb 24).

Come on plod wake up, every policeman should be made to lock up their guns in a secure cabinet at the police station before going off shift.

This is not the first time an of duty drunken plod has shot innocent people, but it should be the last..... Lock up the guns on finishing a shift now.

Poor man young family, clearly he was the main earner, possibly not able to work again, sad, so very sad.

Would that really work ? Every man and his dog seems to have a gun at home anyway - even my wife.

 

Better making all guns illegal AND police locking up guns after work

Still much different from being allowed to walk with a gun in public 24/7.

As far as I know there is an "easier" way to get a license for having a gun at home/premises for self defense.

the legal guns are not the problem (except those of the police)  Most of the crime are committed with illegal guns.

So make sure that posession of illegal guns disappear.

I presume the police chief will come along with a basket of fruit and flowers for a photo op. The police may even pay for the hospital bill but if he can't work he is on his own.....after all the policeman was off duty, it's a private matter ????

Well, the good news is he still can feel being touched and with the right rehabilitation he might be able to get back to normal. The bad news is I don’t think that type of rehabilitation is available to him in Thailand. 
 

Friends of mine built a house in Thailand and one of the main builders befriended them. Once the house was finished he moved to another construction site on which some scaffolding collapsed under which he was standing and he got hit in the back by a plank which also knocked him out. So they put him in a taxi to get him to a hospital which took 1.5 hours because of traffic and because of the way he was either laying or sitting in the taxi the injury to his back got worse and he was paraplegic after that. After a while he could move his arms and legs slightly, but he never got any type of rehabilitation and he died a few years later of a stroke. To this day I’m convinced his condition could have improved considerably if he had gotten proper rehab. 
 

Either way, I hope this guy makes a full recovery!

Very confusing post, you claim your friend was made paraplegic, then could move his arms and legs slightly.

First paraplegia does not affect the arms, secondly, no way was he paraplegic if he could move his legs, go on now tell me i am wrong.

Yeah, TV members love to rail about "Americans and their guns" but fail to grasp how common gun ownership is here in Thailand.  Thailand does have a gun cultural.  However, the price for entry is high.  Handgun prices are about 5 times the retail price of guns elsewhere in the world and shotgun prices about 3 times as much. So it more common to see in middle-class households and above, well, at least legally registered guns. Then the licensing can take weeks to even months.  Most of the issued licenses are for "home defense."  Conceal carry permits are few and far between and the average gun owner does not qualify.  Carry a gun without a permit, no less using it in public, carries extremely stiff penalties. 
Making them illegal?  It probably has more of chance of happening in America before it happens in Thailand.  Nobody other than foreigners make a lot of racket about making guns illegal in Thailand.  The government allows it's (more wealthy) citizen to own a gun for home protection but severely penalizes those who are caught carrying them in public.  And it is very much a part of the culture.  So they don't give a rip about what Eddie Expat thinks.  Nor should they.

For the first 6 months he couldn’t move anything, then he was able to wiggle the toes of one of his feet a bit and a while later he was able to slightly lift his left arm a bit. That’s as far as it got as far as I know. Obviously his spinal chord wasn’t completely severed, that’s why I’m saying with proper rehab he might have been able to move a lot more again. 

 

I mixed up paraplegic with quadriplegic. My bad. 

 

Come to think of it, a guy I know has a friend who jumped into a shallow lake and broke his neck. He was initially quadriplegic, too, but he regained full control over his upper body, but his legs are still dead.

All well & good but what action has been taken against the A-hole that did the shooting? I hope because he is in the PLOD he is not getting preferential treatment ..........!!!
