Mother asks for B100k dog bite compensation

PHUKET: The mother of a 15-year-old girl is seeking B100,000 compensation after her daughter was chased and bitten by a dog as she walked to school in Phuket Town yesterday (Mar 10).

Chotika Kansuya, 32, filed a complaint to Lt Col Suchart Meelampong of the Phuket City Police yesterday morning, several hours after the incident occurred.

Ms Chotika told police that at about 6:40am yesterday her daughter Panitnan Saelim was walking to Satree Phuket School as normal. Whilst on Klong Bang Yai canal near the Phuket Wittayalai School a dog suddenly ran from a house, chased her, and bit her left leg.

Good for her, hope she gets it. Maybe if thais started getting hefty fines for their animals behaviour many would take better care of them. Hopefully the mutt will be destroyed for attacking the kid too.

She should get it too..  the message should be sent out to ALL dog owners that if their animal is unrestrained and can get out and bite / attack people the owner will be penalised. 

Additionally, the dog should be destroyed, it has proven to be aggressive and will bit children. 

 

Of course, the above comments will be unpopular wit dog lovers, but the issue with unrestrained dogs and stray dogs needs to be resolved. 

 

People who can care for their pets properly, walk them, look after them and ensure they are fully looked after are the proper animal lovers - those who just own a dog and let it roam free to scrounge for food are not dog lovers, they perpetuate the problem.

As a life-long dog owner, I agree whole-heartedly with all your comments above except the one that says that your comments will be unpopular with dog lovers.

The real truth is that those who let dangerous dogs run in the streets are far from being dog lovers. They are at worst dog abusers or at best do not care for the welfare of their dogs or for the people or other dogs that their pet running wild will run into.

I live in Laos where it is impossible to walk my dog in most places because of the dogs on the streets and sois that will attack it (my dog is not an aggressive dog). People leave their gates open and the dogs think they should be guarding their section of street too. I have been attacked many times, including when riding my bicycle - in the last case by a large male German Shepherd.

From what I hear in Thailand, it is often the same thing with soi dogs and those who let their dogs run in the streets and don't bother to neuter their pets. The only way to get people to change is to hit them where it hurts, in the wallet. I only wish I could have asked for the amount that this mother is seeking.

our bang kaew doesnt get out of the yard unless its on a leash, thing is while she barks and goes crazy at people outside the fence, once she is walking on a leash she ignores virtually everyone else. Anyone that does not restrain their dogs deserves to be fined, too many just let them run free to <deleted> everywhere else except in their own yards & attack other dogs/people, we have also had a fenced & roofed area done with a  concrete floor(8+ mtrs x 4+ mtrs) so she and our other bitsa have their own area when we have people at the house. If you own dogs you have to take care of them and ensure they cannot get out of the yard even when chained, owner needs to be held responsible

Yes and hopefully a sizable compensation will make those irresponsible dog owners more aware of their responsibility. It is not uncommon that a child could fall and the dog then go for the throat, with terrible consequences.

Just done a house sit in Ari.......either side Huskies keep in cages that were just big enough to stand up and lie down......they struggled to turn around in them........absolutely criminal.

“Khan Thong has never bitten anyone before. I haven’t raised my dogs to attack or bite anyone and I have no idea why the chain restraining him managed to break.

Phuket City Municipality office Chief (Palad) Chalermporn Piyanarongroj went to examine the house and found only two dogs. He did advise Ms. May to keep the dogs caged in future to avoid any possible repeat incident occurring.

 

So , here we have the classic ingredients :

!. Dogs that are kept chained become aggressive for understandable reasons .

2. She says that her dogs were not raised to become aggressive , but she seems to be unable to understand that a dog that is kept chained becomes aggressive alone .

3 . The office chief says the dogs should be caged in . That is even worse .

 

 

This woman should not be allowed to keep her dogs . She does not care to treat them species appropriate , so she should not have dogs .

Here , as in so many other cases with human ' owners ' involved , the fault is that she treated her dogs badly , so they became aggressive .

The fault is with her , she should pay the fine , and the dogs should be taken away from her and left in a place where they can be kept in species appropriate conditions .

Near our main road there was a wire cage in front of a house with a small dog in it . There was no floor in the cage , just the wires ... the dog could not walk on these wires , even standing up was difficult for it .

From time to time it was given some food , but it was always lying down .

One day I stopped and talked to the owner , a woman ... I asked her why she needs to torture that little dog ... she said if she let it out , it would run away ... a few weeks later , I still saw it lying down in the cage ... but this time it would not even try to stand up anymore , it was dead .

Sickening behaviour by the mother, and setting a poor example to her daughter. It isn't up to her to demand money, it is up to the police to take the owner to court where he/she would be fined and a decision made about the dog.

At least, that is what would happen if Thailand had a police force.

Yep it's time that dog owners get a Fence around there yard to keep the dogs in. No Excuse for roaming Dogs.

No dog should be chained up for any length of time like 24/7 we see here. 

It's High Time that the Government get their priority in order ,what's more imported Dogs Or People. 

That should be a No Brainer . Get rid of the Roaming and Soi dogs.

If something happens to your child would you rely on the police to take the correct course of action we would expect to see in our home countries ?

 

The keyboard warrior in me would want to get as much money as possible from the negligent owner of the dog. The keyboard rambo in me would go back and kill the dog to make sure nothing like that ever happened again.

Realistically, I don’t know what I’d do. BUT, I know I have been in plenty of situations (usually on a beach holiday or even walking down a Soi somewhere) where there are stray dogs and I have to move away with my son so that the dogs don’t approach him, or I carry him - I don’t even want any unknown dog coming up to my son and sniffing him, you just never know what makes a dog snap.

As so often, when something goes wrong in Thailand it is primarily seen as a money-making opportunity. I think that is morally repugnant. Other's opinions may vary.

Perhaps. Or, the leash was typical imitation product supplied by our neighbor country to the north.

I remember when I visited my brother on the East Coast. There the houses normally don't have fences and I had to walk through a longer road where almost every house had a dog outside in the garden. They barked a lot but didn't go onto the road. I didn't understand why but I died of fear. Later I learned about the "invisible fences" that blocked the dogs to come to me. What a crazy idea but it worked.

Dog should be put down, might kill next time. Many dogs are sly and will attack if they think they can get away with it
