Thailand’s new increased speed limits are now in effect

The roads on which these laws are aimed are fully capable of the speed increases being installed, they are often the safest roads to drive on, and the toll booths usually deter the more crazy drivers.

It's not the roads that worry me. My fellow drivers, however, do worry me.....

Utter carnage ????

It's a faster way to die...

Why do you care ?? It is only the law that has changed, Not the Thai driving habits. Nothing will change.

people already drive 120+ kph on roads with 90 kph speed limits. can't wait to see zooming 150s even 180s

"This is nonsense. Until drivers can understand stopping distances ANY fast lane driving is potentially deadly. If they want a new law, make it a law that drivers must be educated about driving, then enforce the driving laws", he said, talking to the wall......

Impossible to do 120 most of the time anyway. The passing lane is always blocked by overloaded pick-up trucks

I agree but that's why there are stating a minimum of 100kph in the outside lane. However in light of any accident, your overloaded pick up will simply declare they were doing a u turn irrespective of the distance away.

120kph is quite normal for many countries around the world that have a populous with adequate training and a traffic control system to control it .

Alas Thailand has neither

It has been claimed that some people drive too slow, which is unsafe.

Now we know why over 20.000 people get killed on Thailand's roads every year. Because they drive too slow so Increase the speed limit by 30%  from 90kmh to 120kmh and in doing so,  save lives.

Well done Thailand and thank you for making the roads safer for us.

I see a problem "The new rules state that anyone using the outside lane on a highway must not drive slower than 100km/h but no faster than 120km/h,"  this may be a mis translation, but why is it the "outside" lane, which, unless defined, is different in other countries, eg, Australia, it is the lane furthest from the centre.

We are in Thailand, not Australia. Inside lane is on the LEFT, outside on the RIGHT, same as UK.

As said previously, most road deaths are motorcyclists on straight rural roads between 4-8pm............usualyy pi..ed up !

I sincerely hope they block-off all the infamous U-turns then... or else inform ICU and temples to get ready.

New speed limits in effect already?

Ain't seen any new signs on the roads.

Thais don'r read signs, they just go flat-out for the gap.

Genuine question from a visitor. What counts as a “highway” in Thailand to which this minimum speed applies?  Does it apply to 2 lane highways with U-turn gaps in the central reserve? (Like the 340 or 345 ?)

Any bike training insists you go as fast or slightly faster than the traffic to eliminate being knocked off, reducing the speed has the chance of a greater impact caused by reducing the ability to avoid a collision. Education, education, education, without that you have mayhem

Restricted operation! I just want shares!

It doesn't make the slightest difference what the law says. Speed limits are ignored and are never enforced. All that might happen is that you get a fine notice in the mail after being caught on camera. Actually patrolling the roads to stop anyone speeding is unheard of in Thailand.

So, business as usual.

You can open and run the company, you just can't do any hands-on work yourself.

Those who speak of more carnage here just do not have the facts. A low speed limit does not mean low speeds. Especially in a place like Thailand, where the consequences of speeding are minimal, and the highway patrol are invisible, and nearly non existent. Camera generated speeding tickets mean next to nothing for many of us. The fact is, that 120kph is a safe speed, on a good, divided highway, with good weather conditions. And 90kph was oppressively slow.

Those who want to speed, will speed, low speed limit or not. And although the thought of placing a minimum speed for using the fast lane is a good one, it will never be enforced, as the highway patrol is incompetent, and nearly useless.

yes this makes complete sense!

why have any speed limit at all?

Speaking on behalf of my thai friend..

"What does speed limit mean?"

So this means we should not see a mini van.in the fast lane as there is usually more then 15 in them. As only allowed to do 90km.

Unless it has 15 seats as they can do whatever speed they want.

And who pray tell will enforce it?

So if someone on the inside lane is only doing 40 I cant pass until Im doing over  100? (yes this is only a theoretical question because we all know the 40km/hr drivers like to stick to the outside lane) lol!
