Thailand’s haze problems due to atmospheric conditions, met office

Thailand's meterological office issued its weather forecast for the next twenty four hours with Daily News concentrating on their excuses for the haze being suffered in many parts of the country.

This the met office said was as a result of low pressure causing hot conditions in the upper reaches of the country.

This meant that particulate matter in the atmosphere was being trapped.

Places like Chiang Mai in particular have been beset by haze this past week.

Daily News had a picture of the gloom but didn't say where it was taken.

In other weather reports the media said it would be stormy across eight southern provinces and Bangkok would be hazy.

The haze is due to atmospheric conditions in so much as there’s no wind or rain to blow away the smoke from fires.

Until someone tackles the true underlying cause, the problem will continue every year.

Well it's a bit hard to tell, is'nt it!

Dear Sir

Where does this 'particulate matter in the atmosphere' come from?

  • Popular Post

for over the last three weeks (since thailand entered into hot season - ie the southerly monsoon started to blow), there is a constant very high pollution level in the north.

There is a scientific article (little badly translated from thai) "Haze and forest fires in the northern region: Causes, myths and trial and error"

Doh!....the atmosphere....now move along.

well it is true that temperature inversions trap any haze below the inversion level itself, but you have to generate the pollution in the place for it to get trapped.  They seem to be ignoring that obvious fact.   As inversions are a regular phenomena in the tropics, countries in this part of the World need to be even more vigilant about generating pollution, something they seem incapable of doing.

Ok will try and ask slowly for you, how does the particulate matter get into the atmosphere in the first place?

This one is from NASA

No matter what Thai officials do to enforce the rice, sugar and corn plantation burn-offs, there is little they can do about the haze drifting across the borders.

They really should open a purpose-built stadium for this so the best excuse-makers in the country can compete against each other in front of tens of thousands of spectators to qualify for the bi-annual national championships.

making excuses is the national sport of thailand all governments world wide!

and the atmospheric conditions are caused by burning fields.  I see them burning around my area everyday this time of the year.  A couple of weeks ago drove from Ratchaburi to Singburi and back.  It was the same condition throughout the whole trip.

Unfortunately their not any good at it.

Tart - your problem with your thinking...Thai gov does nothing productive in stopping intentional burning...if they stopped provincial burning, does it really matter if 10% comes over the border...

who wouldn’t accept a 90% reduction...enough with irrelevant excuses...focus on the main culprit local burning...

Burning locals is a very bad thing to do.

I'm waiting for the blindingly obvious to come out next.......... " It's all come from Farangland "..........

Sad but True

Thailand’s haze problems due to atmospheric conditions, met office

No it isn't.  The haze is due to the inability of the Police force to apply the law properly and the inability of the government to do anything useful about it.

They're all burnt in the end.

Haze in Bangkok is usually Smog.  It is seldom  just a mist from water vapor, unfortunately. Wear your masks,  oh I guess most Thais

do wear them against the smog anyway.

Geezer

And politicians hiring speaker vans to bring traffic to a standstill; and locals burning their rubbish instead of just throwing it on the side of quiet roads.

There was a documentary on Ch4 (I think) about illegal fly tipping in UK. Far worse than anything I have seen over here....10,000 discarded tyres on one stretch or road.

Goernment spokesperson says

"This is simply smoke waiting to clear."

Isn’t my thinking and haven’t any problem.. This is a declaration of NASA, not mine.

Living in North Chiang Mai for years, I got pulmonary emphysema thanks to the BURN SEASON.  Every year I fly to the southern islands for months to avoid this pollution.  COVID has blocked the trip this year and I have fixed it with air purifiers and air conditioning. I know and see how Government DO NOTHING ..Thais will burn their lands and forest until, i.e... the Turism business disappear completely and there are nothing more to burn.
