“When you think of someone beautiful in Thailand, they have to be skinny, to be white and have long hair, and everyone thinks that way.”

Miss Universe Thailand 2020, Amanda Obdam, reflects on what Thai women should be, to be considered beautiful and attractive.

Pressures to be “beautiful”

Along her way to becoming Miss Universe Thailand, Amanda admits there is a lot of pressure for women to fit into the idealistic beauty standards.

“Believe it or not, I do get comments saying I’m too short to be in pageants,” said Amanda. “There’s so much pressure to be skinny, so much pressure to answer the question correctly, but they’re all forgetting that, at the end of the day, we’re all human beings.”

Yeah, but are you not conforming to and promoting the stereo type ?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,.

Personally if I wanted a "white" Asian I would be in China or Japan.

I much prefer the dusky maidens of Thailand. They should stop all the BS and also ban any cosmetic surgery.

"Natural" beauty is what should be promoted and is far better in my opinion.

Gotta love it.  From "prefer" to "ban" in the same paragraph.

I think the woman is referring to THAI attitudes, and not those of farangs.

Most farangs seem to prefer darker maidens, but that may be because the ones referred to in the OP normally don't go out with farangs and anyway would probably be too expensive to buy from their parents ( sin sod ).

REALLY??? I guess I'm not everybody. I never think about the hair length, colour of the hair or skin. In fact, I kind of prefer brown skin (he, heh) or that's what my wife tells me (who happens to be about the color of AOC).

she has a canadian dad and a thai-chinese mom.

many thai-chinese, while living in thailand for generations, have only chinese ancestry.

so she may not have a drop of thai blood in her

Why would any woman participate in a beauty contest?

That only makes sense for a woman if she thinks she is more beautiful than many others according to the standards of that competition. Tall, skinny, beautiful skin, nice smile, the usual criteria. And those criteria are well known.

Lots of beautiful women don't participate in those contests. They are just happy the way they are. Maybe a little browner or a little shorter or whatever. Who cares? The only people who care are those with the competitions. Don't join them, problem solved!
