Thai court sentences 15 people to up to 5 years for 2017 soccer match-fixing

Fifteen people in Thai League soccer circles, including a former referee, a former linesman, a former soccer club manager, former players and others, were sentenced to prison terms of 1 to 5 years today by the Criminal Court in a landmark match-fixing case.

The offences were committed in 2017 and involved four Thai League and League Cup matches, namely Ubon UMT vs Si Sa Ket FC, which Ubon UMT won 3:0, Nakhon Ratchasima FC vs Suphan Buri FC and Navy FC vs Pattaya United FC, both of which ended in a two all draw, and Navy FC vs Muang Thong FC, which Muang Thong won 2:1.

All were charged with match-fixing during the 2017 season. The court ruled that the prosecution evidence, which included eyewitness accounts, audio tapes of phone communications and conversations via the WeChat app, were sufficient to prove their involvement in match fixing.
