Thai government encourages people to travel this Songkran

Government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said that Thais were free to travel at Songkran - it was the government's way of giving happiness to the people, reported INN News.

It was true that the CCSA (Covid steering committee) had recommended no water splashing, no concerts, no powder and no foam parties but that didn't mean travel was off the table.

She said that Thais were free to travel to their villages or go off for tourism jaunts as they pleased.

Though this should be along the lines of the "new normal".

She said that Monday 12th had been declared a special extra holiday meaning that from Saturday 10th to Thursday 15th was a six day Songkran holiday.

INN made no comment about what many Thai watchers will feel - that expecting Thais to return to work on Friday 16th is unrealistic; Thaivisa notes that most non-government workers not required to be in work will consider Songkran 2021 to be a nine day break.

INN further reported that tourism minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan would be proposing two Songkran schemes to the cabinet namely the "Tour Thailand" plan and phase three of the "Let's Travel Together" plan.

Loopholes that led to widespread corruption of the latter have now been plugged, said the media.

Another pathetic suggestion !

Thailand reports huge surge in COVID-19 cases, 1 more death

  • Why not ask people to remain where they are, until they get these new Covid outbreaks under control ?
  •

They forgot to mention which hotels should be booked and at which restaurants should be eaten (preferably owned by...)

What the hell.....spread it about a bit.......(isn't she the drug dealers common law wife?)

Yes the people should travel. It gets boring already that in the daily Covid reports always the same locations are mentioned.

Next major announced due on or after the 20th April.

Emergency decree extended for another 2 months. Thai Government orders schools and Universities to close, all regions. Entertainment venues closed, restaurants takeaway only, provincial travel only in special circumstances. Work from home orders for those lucky enough to still have a job.

The people have had their happiness now for some much needed pain again.

Spread the Happiness, spread the Love , but above all else spread your Money.

songkran is  almost 3 weeks away.

Thailand has still fluid covid situation. Local clusters will mushroom periodically in the central provinces every month, until there is vax for the wider population.

that's why the government should not actively encourage unnecessary long distance travel.

A lot of people travel around the kingdom nowadays anyways, why not in April, too? Plus, it'll help replenish the state coffers.

Doom and gloom but my bet is Songkran travel will finally overwhelm our hospitals. We counted the days from New Year & Chinese New Year travel but this is far & away more widespread infection.

Some provinces, esp in Isaan, have little Covid. So let's spread some spikes of happiness from the capital.

Some percentage of healthcare workers have been vaccinated but they won't be fully protected by end of Songkran.

Truly a disaster waiting to happen. Let's just say, a little money gets spread around by Songkran travel. Will the real money, foreign tourists be willing to come here if Covid is not even under control, let alone the population vaccinated!

That should ensure a few more hundred dead bike riders and drunk drivers; good call.

Just don't have fun.  And don't ever dare to throw water.

that's because there are 360 other days to travel, there is no need encourage mass travel within those 5 days.

Travel from towns to villages during this time doesn't boost much coffers - petrol, alcohol don't cost that much. But those 5-9 days switch off economy, as everything is closed. From en economic point of view short brakes, like long weekends, do generate more money and don't necessarily slow production, export

Slightly off topic but the same goes for the local elections, why does my Mrs have to travel 3 + hours on Sunday to vote ? When is this cr*p gonna be replaced by a postal or online vote ? How many people will either not bother voting or how many unnecessary journeys will be made ??

Crazy idea, with the news of over 400 positive infections, the situation will only get worse, and spread the virus all over Thailand,

Shear madness....

I can think of a potential group of travelers that would make people happy, most of them are part of the government.
