Thailand on Monday reported 985 new COVID-19 cases, the biggest daily jump for a second day in a row, as the country deals with a third wave of infections and a highly contagious variant.

Of the new cases, 980 were local transmissions, while 5 were imported from people entering quarantine.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan were among the provinces to report the highest number of new cases.

A further 34 people were discharged from hospital having made a full recovery.

5,265 people remain in hospital receiving treatment.

Monday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 33,610 with 97 deaths.

Add these two TAT Ministers to the numbers.  The government folks seem to not be Covid free after getting vaccinated.   https://www.tatnews.org/2021/04/tourism-authority-of-thailands-announc

They don't seem to cross the 1,000 a day mark without a bit of flatlining first.

Wishing them a speedy recovery.

The numbers today should be higher but I think they are reflecting the hospitals running short on tests and the actual lab doing the checking of being overwhelmed much like the government who was caught off guard.

Yesterday's tally of 967 was a record case count high for 2021. Today's number surpass that again, slightly.

As cases rise and accumulate, so do hospitalizations, as government policy is that any positive case must be hospitalized in some form or fashion.

5265 total hospitalizations as of today, including 4,683 in traditional hospitals, 582 in field hospitals, and including 9 cases in serious condition such as requiring intubation.

It's worth noting, the number of what the government calls medically "serious" cases has not been rising lately, even as the total hospitalizations have been skyrocketing as new case numbers rise.

Its just been announced in a study that the Sinovac vaccine is only 3% effective after first shot, so yea pretty useless, it goes up a bit after the second to 27.7% for the first two weeks then rises to 56.5 after that.

However this is not with the UK/Cambodian strain, a Thai expert has already tested this on that strain and reported poor results so overall not looking good at all.

My wife took the first shot a few days ago, I call her "3 percent" now.....LOL

But the study by the University of Chile also found that one dose of the Sinovac jab was only 3 per cent effective against infection

Its called accumulation, a bit like a bitcoin price chart before it spikes over a threshold.

That or its just an obvious lack of testing.

Get enough vaccine to vaccinnate the whole nation!  Distribute it around the country fairly, starting with those at greatest risk, health workers and other front line staff, people with previous conditions, the elderly etc.  Without enough vaccine it is difficult to get anyone on board!

I think we need to call in the Global testing Police to make some inquiries.

Familiar daily charts from the MoPH...

The first showing the trend line of new cases. The red line showing self referred cases, and the tan bars show cases identified through government outreach testing, both back to mid-December. The chart, for whatever reason, doesn't add the two subtotals together, but instead overlaps them together on the same chart.

And then, Thailand's standing both internationally and compared to its regional peer countries.

Daily vaccinations update, numbers up just slightly over the prior day. Total doses, then first and second shot subtotal numbers cumulatively.

Some province by province tallies for the day from the Thai Enquirer, as well as cumulative tallies. For the latest day, Bangkok's number of new cases is eclipsed by Chiang Mai:

"Of the 980 local cases that were found in the past 24 hours, 246 were found in Chiang Mai alone, followed by Bangkok (137), Chonburi (92), Samut Pakan (83).

The third wave had led 3,762 cases between April 1 and 11. Of that, 1,350 were found in Bangkok alone, followed by Chonburi (405), Chiang Mai (383) and Prachuap Khiri Khan (141)."

Other province new case tallies for the day:

--Prachuap Khiri Khan -- 52
--Pathum Thani -- 36
--Rayong -- 31
--Samut Sakhon -- 25
--Phuket & Nakhon Pathom -- 17
--Udon Thani -- 10
--Chiang Rai -- 10
--Khon Kaen -- 9

The full list of every province is posted later in this thread here.

Note: some local provinces and governors have taken lately to releasing their own local new case numbers, and sometimes those take a day or more before they're fully reflected in the national statistics.

Could it be that the tests are running short because of a significant increase in testing running up to the holiday?  That could be why the shortage?

More testing, more cases too?

The curve doesn't exactly follow.  Today's numbers should have been much higher.  Hmmm....

Think of 2 days ago when they had to stop testing at the hospitals because of bed issues, then think about how many tests they can actually process in one day and that may be the issue  We ay have reached maximum testing levels and therefore is why we never see the true numbers expand.  But then that is just my opinion.

Hello Thai Visa news, what on earth are you going on about ?

Today’s case numbers have increased by 18 from yesterday.

Perhaps an honest mistake but suggest you check your articles more carefully or you may lose credibility....

But yesterdays numbers were lower than todays and yesterdays were a record so far for a daily case number, so todays, even though it only increased by 18, is higher than yesterdays and therefore a new record for the daily number of infections.....Nope the title is correct, you just can not see it.

Hard to tell whether there's any significance to that or not. It's numbers coming off a holiday weekend, where lots of government folks are away, hospitals are probably shorter staffed, and even the vaccine administrations slowed down, not to mention the testing availability issues. Any impact of the Song Kran holiday spread will take some days to surface to whatever extent it does.

Biggest daily jump.?

Wot is he firking on about.

A few days earlier it was a jump of over 40%.

Yep - fair enough but doesn’t a “daily jump” infer a daily increase rather than a total number ?

Anyway, a new daily record number of cases today, however we describe it!

Good work Government.. Mr Prayuth and Anutin.. thank you very much for this happiness.. Numbers up every day.

Maybe the biggest daily jump in cases but only a few more than yesterday...so again no exponential growth.

Still a jump of 18, but I am sure had they not curtailed testing two days ago because of a lack of bed space here in Bangkok the numbers could be higher.

Actually, not having it !

The daily new case numbers have been increasing steadily for 8-10 days, so if they are referring to daily rates why would they say the following and not biggest daily jump for 10th day in a row..
