Thailand reports 1,458 new COVID-19 cases, 2 new deaths

Thailand reported 1,458 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday and 2 additional deaths.

 

Of the new cases, 1,346 were local transmissions, while 108 were imported from people entering quarantine and 4 foreign infected persons (screening at checkpoint and entering the hospital/quarantine).

 

17,162 people remain in hospital receiving treatment, 29,371 have recovered.

 

Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 46,643 with 110 deaths.

I believe this is now 3 days in a row of stable case numbers at around 1500 new infections, which is down from the recent highs of about 1800 a week or so ago. It's good to see their continues to be no sign of an exponential increase in cases from all the travel and Songkran gatherings.

Thailand reported more than 1,000 new COVID cases for an 8th consecutive day on Wednesday, with its total of 1,458 ticking up slightly 1 percent from the 1,443 yesterday.

 

But the latest number remained below the peak new cases number of 1,767 reached on April 18, as well as plus 1,500 numbers reached April 15-17.

 

In an ominous development, though, the number of COVID cases said by the government to be in serious condition rose 16% from 223 yesterday to 259 today, even though the new cases rose only 1 percent.

Its indeed good to see, though you have to wonder about how much testing is being done. They never seem to tell that and you hear of people being send away if they want to do tests. But yes its positive if its true.

The two new deaths bringing Thailand's total to 110 COVID deaths were reported with the following details:

 

--a 56-year-old Thai woman from Bangkok with numerous pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes and kidney failure.

 

and

 

--a 32-year-old Thai man from Nonthaburi with reported lung disease and allergies listed as pre-existing conditions.

What is the incubation period of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19)? The incubation period is the time from exposure to the appearance of the first symptoms. The estimated incubation period for the disease is 1–14 days and the symptoms usually appear in about 4–5 days.

 

And all come from how much test have done! Nothing clear in Thailand! + half people not get symptoms!

So can't take any positive news when it comes to Thailand...and any good news is because of something nefarious.

Something is not correct in this story.

 

On the one hand we are told that this spread like wildfire in 20 days from a single nightlife area out to every province in the country and then on the other hand we are told this seemingly ultra virulent strain just miraculously stabilised without growing any further.

 

Either this did not start on the 22nd March and was already widespread in the community OR the numbers are low due to inadequate testing.

So here are the numbers for the past week...starting with the start of Songkran on the 14th until today. They range from 1335 new infections at the start of the week to the high of 1767 a few days ago and down to today's 1458. It's quite a tight band, and no evidence of exponential spread as yet, a week on from the start of Songkran.

In terms of province breakdowns, the government reported new cases in 67 of 77 provinces today, one fewer province than yesterday.

 

Once again the same as yesterday, only two Thailand provinces reported more than 100 new cases of COVID.

 

Bangkok, the country's most populous province, topped the list as usual with 365 new cases (up slightly from 350 reported yesterday), and a total of 4,330 since the beginning of April.

 

Chiang Mai again had the second most cases, with 134 reported today (up from 116 yesterday), making a total of 2,500 since the beginning of April.

 

The other provinces with 30 or more new cases reported on Wednesday were the following (with the prior day's totals in parentheses):

 

Chonburi -- 80 (down from 82)

Nonthaburi -- 69 (up from 23)

Rayong -- 64 (up from 35)

Samut Sakhon -- 54 (up from 43)

Prachuap Khiri Khan -- 47 (up from 41)

 

Song Khla -- 41 (up from 29)

Samut Prakan -- 39 (down from 60)

If they were transparent with the numbers of test being done people would be more inclined to trust the information. Cases numbers alone mean little. Percentage of tests returning a positive are a much better indicator of how the virus is tracking.

Testing doubled on the 18th and positive cases increased only about 15%...that's a good sign.

What does "transparant" mean...and no matter how transparent the Thai authorities were, many on T-V would still disavow them as fake and alledge some kind of cover-up if they were good. And the test done are reported as the post above shows.

Family taken to hospital after infected father, denied treatment, has to wait 3 days for ambulance

 

A family of five living in Soi Saimai 85 in Bangkok’s Saimai district were transported to hospital for treatment after contracting Covid-19 from an infected father, who was forced to stay home awaiting an ambulance for three days after being denied immediate treatment by a private hospital because it had reportedly run out of beds.

 

The father, aged 58, reportedly took a test at the private hospital on April 13 after one of his friends whom he had dinner with on April 8 informed him that he had tested positive for Covid-19. When the father’s test came back positive, the hospital told him to wait at his house and they would send an ambulance to pick him up.

 

However, when three long days passed and no ambulance showed up, the father finally decided to send five of his family to Bhumibol Hospital for a test. They were all found to be infected.

It probably more about a really serious attempt to locate and isolate as many positive cases as possible to limit the spread.

I'm betting that testing is a bottleneck and responsible for the consistent numbers seen.  

Now whether this testing bottleneck is manufactured is another matter...

A government spokesman said Wednesday Thai health officials will be investigating reports that Thai medical staff suffered blood clots and stroke-like symptoms after receiving doses of the Sinovac COVID vaccine.

Six medical staff in Rayong and one in Chonburi’s Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital suffered paralysis after receiving Sinovac vaccine jabs, a health official said on Tuesday.

Looking at this data, Thailand is currently testing just short of the rate recommended by the WHO. The WHO recommends one positive case for every ten negative as the benchmark for adequate testing.

 

This translates to a 9% positivity rate for adequate testing. From the data above the positivity rate for April 17th: 14.7%, April 18th: 9.4%, April 19th: 10.3%.

 

I think from this data, we can surmise this outbreak is not yet under control, but is also not exploding into a worrying problem. But upping the testing would certainly give us a clearer picture.
