BANGKOK (NNT) - Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith has given his assurances that the government has enough money to continue funding Covid-relief programs and kick-start the economy.

He said the 400 billion baht left of the one trillion-baht-loan secured via the state of emergency was enough to care for people facing hardship, and the government was also still considering a third extension of the popular Kon La Krueng (Half-Half) co-payment scheme.

Mr Arkhom said a mix of relief and economic stimulus measures were in the pipeline to sustain the economy, adding that there were also funds remaining in the Rao Chana and Rao Rak Kan financial aid schemes left over from the previous Covid-19 handouts.

The minister said the new outbreak was being monitored closely to see how long it was likely to take before the virus is contained. That in turn would help determine if the country remained on course to achieving its 4% economic growth forecast for 2021.

Prayut and his economic team facing unprecedented test of crisis management

Supattanapong recently urged consumers to draw out their bank savings and begin spending to help shore up the fragile economy hit hard by the new wave of infections.

A fierce backlash followed, with Supattanapong criticized for “lacking knowledge” of managing an economy when people are suffering from falling incomes and job losses.

He defended himself by claiming people had misunderstood his short statement on the issue. He explained that bank deposits had increased despite the surge in infections this year. The government believes that pumping this money into consumption would help to stabilize the economy. He also pledged incentives to spur spending by consumers and private investors.

I wouldn`t have expected them to say anything different....????

Why does the news always say lots of words that say nothing.

Never trust them with numbers. The next day they will change the story with excuses like missing 1 or 2 digits.

Just buy some vaccines so the country can restart...
